Posted September 1, 200618 yr Well it all started when my lil Talullah was bored and she'd been doing her "tearing stuff apart" and i was trying to think of something to keep her amused. I ended up thinking i'd try her with a snack just cause i wanted to treat her a little. Now my budgies dont have much in the way of fruit and veggies, maybe a lil apple or carrot everynow and again but i started looking thru this forum looking for something yummy and came up with the follow recipe kinda jumbled up from other recipes and adding my own little bit. 1 boiled egg boiled rice grated cuttlefish wholemeal breadcrumbs spinach Bird seed So i boiled the egg and cut it up small, then boiled some spinach in with the rice and cooled and dried it with paper towels. I then used my nutmeg grate to shave some cuttlefish into the bowl which came out like a very fine powder. I combined them all together and then jsut to dry it out a little added the breadcrumbs. I then added bird see just in the hope that even if they dont eat the rest maybe they will pick out the seed and get some good stuff come with it to get them used to it. I just used a whole egg and then however much of the rest of it seemed appropriate. I have only just put it in the cage in a jam jar lid on the floor to see if they will even eat it but heres hoping as Pepsi especially has been thru a VERY hefty moult and was looking really worse for wear and i'm hoping it will be nice to get something like egg into him to get him healthy. Anyway will let you know how it goes *cross your fingers for me* Bye for now Helen, Talullah and Pepsi :feedbirds:
September 1, 200618 yr Nope not a scrap *rolls eyes* Altho i figure thats pretty normal, first time and all.. jsut a bit bummed! I offered Talullah some egg from it as well, she took two nibbles and didnt even come back for a look after that :S I'm hoping over night they might try some, if not i'll take it out in the morning.... anyway will let you know if things change... still thought it was a nice recipe for birds who ACTUALLY eat such things hehe
September 1, 200618 yr Talullah is munching away as we speak Pepsi wont touch it but 1 out of 2 is all good
September 2, 200618 yr Yea Pepsi doesnt eat apple or other snacks anyway so i'm not too worried. He is 4 years old and barely spent time with in earlier years due to being in a aviary as apposed to handtame Talullah, so its all good :budgiedance:
September 12, 200618 yr I'm of the opinion that if you leave it long enough, they can smell, that they might get interested in it. I think many times at first they are startled by what the new food looks like, then they test it, smell it, before they try it. So the more often the birds see it and smell it--the sooner they get adjusted to it and eventually try it. I did this with my birds and they now are curious about new things--as opposed to being nervous about them. Which is normal for them to be nervous at first, but then their curious nature takes over and then they're having a ball!!!
September 12, 200618 yr Well i have to say, having said that Pepsi wasnt into new foods i gave him a fresh spinach leave the other day and he went up to it within about a minute and ate some - YAY.... It must smell real good i reckon :hap:
