Bad Start

:( Well I posted a while ago asking for advise as when to get rid of unhatched eggs, as I was unsure after candeling. Unfortunatley all the eggs in the clutch were infertile. However onlya few days after I discarded the eggs my Hen started Laying again this time 5 eggs. Unfortunatley 4 of these eggs were infertile again. One was fertile but dead in shell I think the egg may have had a small puncture. So all in all not a good start. This pair is now back in "general population" and I have another two pairs set up. The first pair are bonding well and I have seen them mating a few times this week. The hen is a yellow face blue spangle and the cock a sky blue normal but he has a white patch on the back of his head and I am told this means he is split for another mutation?

The second pair is a sky blue spangle hen and a sky blue domiant pied cock I just paired them today and the cock tried to jump straight on!

So fingers crossed everyone I will have better luck this time.

The pied spot like my Merlin in my siggy means he is a Dominant Pied, it doesn't mean he is split for another mutation. The person who told you that may have been confused with the Cockatiels because if they have the pied spot it means they are split for the pied gene. In budgies it means they are the mutation Dominant Pied nothing more. It doesn't mean he isn't carrying a recessive gene but it doesn't mean he is either .

Maybe you will get more adviced from experienced breeders on the boards. My question is what are you feeding them while they are breeding and having babies? This could be one cause not having enough calcium and/or nutriuets. Also how old are your budgies, where they first time breeders. Just throwing it out there you may already know these answers and be more experienced then I but just laying the ground work in case you wanted some suggestions :wine.

Have a great day.

sorry to hear your first couple didn't work out Kelly. I hope oyu have better luck this time with the nw pairs. if you do you will have some great looking babies.

My hen is two years old and my cock 18months it was the first time for both of them. I feed them seed with some fresh fruit or vege each day and as a treat they also get some milk soaked wholemeal bread once a week. They also have a calcium mineral block which they both get stuck into. I think I am doing things right but I am just a beginner sure. You would have much more experience then myself and any advise is greatly appreciated. So thank you

Thanks Nerwen.

I am a little disappointed because it was so exciting to see the eggs. I am very optimistic though. My husband is putting his foot down he says I am not allowed to buy any more birds until these ones start producing! This is very addictive this whole Budgie thing. I think it will be exciting to see what clours and combinations I will get they are all beautiful birds so their babies should be too.

Hi Kelly, Just a couple of things. You may need to Clip around the vent on both birds. Modern day budgerigars have a denser fether than the wild budgie. This causes problems with mating. Some people pluck the vent feathers but it is better to clip them.

With the DIS (Dead in Shell) it proves that both hen and cock are fertile. I would be thinking or reseting them after the ones you just set up.

The head spot does mean a dominant pied. A split gene can not be seen. You can only guess if it is there and it will only show in the next generations.

I did think the same thing with the DIS at least I know they are both fertile. I thought maybe after a rest they can try again. My hen was starting to lose some condition so I thought it best to rest her for a while. I will definatly try the clipping before I start them again.

Thank you for the advise.

Daz,

I took your advise and I have set up three pairs all with Vents Clipped! (not an easy task) I have been away on ten days holiday and had a friend looking after my birds for me.(an ex budgie breeder) I returned home today to find one of my hens sitting on her first egg. Yeah!!! I am so excited I hope it all works out this time. Maybe it will be a case of third time lucky.

She is a Yellow face type II sky blue spangle and the Cock is a Normal Sky Blue.

I will keep you posted.

Kelly.

Thanks Kelly

All the best this time.

The chicks will be great. Hope you get spangles.

Update on the 3 pairs I set up. 4 eggs in one, 6 chicks in the other and the third didn't work out so I sent them back to the flight for a couple of weeks.

Another pair I set up has 5 eggs.

fingers crossed.

Kelly.
