Posted August 31, 200618 yr I have a hen that tarted laying before her babies left the nest. I discared the first two and thought she had stopped laying when no more appeared for 4 days. She had one baby left in the nest as it was the youngest by7 days. When he left the nest there were 3 eggs under him (cunning Mum). Well so far 3 have hatched. The first at 16 days, 2nd at 16 days, 3rd at 15 days. (these were numbered when baby was removed) Is it likely all 9 will hatch? I dread the thought If so, do I foster them out? If I have to foster them out, is it best to put them with a male that I know is a good feeder. Or a Hen. Please dont tell me all 9 will hatch:blink: Cindy
August 31, 200618 yr all 9???? I thought there was only three, or did she continue to lay eggs afterwards?? There is a chance all can hatch, as to fostering out this is only done if you have another pair set up which you can transfer eggs or babies to that nest, not into a single bird. If your super worryed you can remove the last few egg now before anything has a chance to 'grow' or get some handrearing formula and get ready to help with feedings if need be.
August 31, 200618 yr It is normal for budgies to begin laying a second clutch before the first one is gone. If conditions are good they may even try for three, although if that happens you really need to remove the nest box and possibly seperate the parents. If you do that, leave any babies over 3 weeks old with dad. So the fact that the second clutch is hatching is a normal event. Exactly how many eggs are there in the second clutch? Is it 9, or is 9 the total for both clutches? If they are fertile and incubated properly, there is no reason the second clutch won't hatch. Did you not know your hen would continue to lay? :wine

There is 9 in this clutch, 4 have hatched. 2. No, she had stopped laying for approx5 days and started again. It is the first 4 of this 9 that have already hatched. 3, Yes I know it is normal for them to have the 2nd clutch, I just did not want her to. I'll just have to keep my finger crossed, that I get to remove the eggs in time. I dont want to throw any that are due in the nest 2-3 days. Although I may have to do it now as some have hatched daily instead of every 2nd day -2 hatched in 15 days Cindy
