Posted August 30, 200618 yr I want to start ringing my birds. Iv'e read alot on the actual procedure, but i want to know how I get ingraved rings and what to do. Also what is on a ring and I would like to know what everyone here says about the right way and when to ring a budgie.
August 30, 200618 yr I'm not 100% sure but i'm pretty sure you get the rings from a local budgie club and that they'll be different colours each year. You ring chicks when they're really really young. If you want to ring older birds you will need to get split rings which you can get from pet shops.
August 30, 200618 yr The age at which to ring the chick will depend on the size of its foot but will be between 6 and 10 days. If you ring too early the ring will fall off and you will have to repeat the process after locating the discarded ring in the nest box. This is preferable to leaving it too late because then it will be impossible to carry out. The ring may be placed on either leg and to do so the chick's leg should be held between thumb and forefinger, support the chick in your hand and group the three largest toes together and slide the ring on. The ring should be positioned up the leg and the back toe will be trapped underneath it, with either the quill end of a tail feather or a sharpened matchstick this toe can be released. This process initially is not as easy as it sounds but soon becomes second nature. Note....an experienced breeder showed me that to know when the chick is ready for legbanding......look at the toe pointing backwards ( hold it gently back along the leg ) and if it reaches to the bend in the leg it is ready for banding.
August 30, 200618 yr Numbered rings can be bought from some pet stores. You can get numbered split rings or solid rings. The numbering is only 2 or 3 digits eg 21 or 213. To get the Numbered breeders rings you have to be in a club or contact the manufacture direct. As Bubbles wrote, it is not easy to start with but you do get the hang of it. after time :fear
August 31, 200618 yr Author Thanks for that, I like the trick about the back toe bending to the bend in the leg that should give me a good idea of when to ring. I'm still not sure about how I get the rings with a reference to me and the year
