Breeding Time

Featured Replies

I might be onto something.

In "How To Set Up A Breeding Cage And Manage The Breeding Of Budgerigars" I explaned that I set the hen up in the breeding cage 1st. Then placed the nest box in a few days latter and then a few days after that the cock. Well 9 days to the day we have the first egg.

This is two out of two with this proceedure. I have usually place the Nest box, hen and cock in at the same time. More times than not it hasn't worked. I have spoken to some other breeders that do it differently.

What do you think hath? Has it got merits?

I've read about putting the hen in first.

Tried to Ring Aqua today but it came off, in a BIG clean today I found out Opal's ring fell off at some point :) it was clearly still on the foot sunday morning (after being done saterday) now the foot is too big.

Cupid is an opaline  The blue is at last showing on the wings, and Tingle is so very very dark still. Interested in seeing more colour on him soon.

Hey there!

Daz...When did the recessive pieds dark markings come up? I have a baby from my yf male and skyblue normal female that doesnt have any markings and hes 5 days old..all others are yf, or cobalts..hes clear. Im thinking hes opaline, or recessive pied. Both parents are pet shop birds so i dont know backgrounds...(ps- I started thread under mutations...talking about "What will Quinn be growing up?"...or check my breeding thread called "Baby journal")..

NERWEN!!!!! THEY ARE SOO CUTE!!!! Can we get some more piccies?!?!?! :hap: (Laughing out loud) Your guys are so fluffly compared to mine! Mine are just feathery, yours are 'downy factories' (Laughing out loud)

if it works for you daz use it my set up is to introduce the hen with two hours of day light left then the cock with one hour of daylight left and leave them over night (i have found this way less hens reject the male) i place a thin piece of card with a hole in it over the whole of the nest box for the hen to rip out i start the count of days to the first egg from the next morning most times the 1st egg will appear on the 7th day with the rest on the 8th but theres always the odd pair that take longer my breeding season starts soonaround nov i will pair twos pairs like you daz to see what happens

Thanks Hath. I am always interested in how others set their birds up.

I have heard one person selects his hens and places them in each on the breeding cages with out the nest boxes. He then places his cocks one in each show cage so that he inspect the birds for features and can hold each show cage up to the breeding cage to compare birds. Then when he is happy on the pairings he will take the hens from the breeding cages and place them in the show cage with the selected cocks. He leaves them there for an hour to see if the pairings are compatible. During this time he places the nest boxes on the breeding cages. After the hour those that seem to be getting a long are then both placed back into the breeding cages.

A bit too much for me.

Thanks Shawna, But I lost a new hatched yesterday. I had to hand feed him last night but he didn't make it. He was the forth in the clutch. The other three seem to be okay.

yes they are Daz and both seem to have a pied spot Kazza's around four feathers and Minka's only one  Seems to suit becuase there foster mum is a pied too.

Well they should be either sky blue or cobalt. They will be carrying the greywing gene. Mum is a greywing and dad is split to greywing.

 I have a pied spot

Yayayayayayayya!!! I am so excited !! :D

Kaz I'd go straight to the hair dresser and get it streaked.

:P Good one Daz

Cupid has found his voice and now cries when I hold him, Tingle still loved to check everything out :) as does Darel.

One of my oldest is out of the nest box. She's 30days today. Hope to get a photo tomorrow. :P

YAY :ausb:

Cupid is so big now, he was trying to 'hide' while I held him before and climbed his way up my neck (tickling me with his toenails) to hide in my hair, which at the moment is just below my ears :glare:. It was almost as if he was sitting on my shoulder wub.gif

Tingle (the second) is very happy to look around at the world and dashes from place to place as if in a hurry all the time tongue.gif Darel (fourth) also loves to look around at the place, he has a yellow head and yellow on his wings with light blue starting to show around his tail area.

I think Storm might be a white face blue. Not 100% Storm is third anywhere from about 5 hours to 12 hours older than Darel. This one is a bit shy. The last two havn't really shown their personaility (sp?) yet.

Kazza and Minka are kinda happy to sit in your hand but not interesting in looking around much.

I will take some photos again soon.

I love pics can't wait :). Glad everything is going well for both of you (daz and nerwen)

Gotta put up new pics! Those babies are gorgeous!!!!

Got some more of my Great Grandchildren? :(Laughing out loud):
