Posted August 28, 200618 yr Hello everyone, Im Sue, Im fairly new to the "Budgie Club" world. Sorry to start off with a problem, but I didnt know who else to turn to...... I picked up a beautiful (older) grey hen from a very reputable Breeder, (he gave her to me) and told me that she was "going" because she did not lay for him last season. I was happy to take her and give her a try, she is a very beautiful bird. Anyway, all has gone to plan, she paired up and started sitting in her nest box (without any eggs), I was planning to pop a couple under her if she didnt lay any of her own. Tonight, she is out of the box, sitting on the perch looking rather unhappy and not really fussed on having her partner being "lovey-dovey" to her. I pulled her out and have found that she has a very large (although soft) belly, which was not there a couple of weeks ago. Now I am stressing that she is laying internally, and if so what do I do to help her?????? or will I end up losing her????? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Kind Regards SueL
August 28, 200618 yr Does your bird have a swelling near the vent area ? If the vent or near has a swelling and your bird looks fatigued or distressed, it's possible it is eggbound. A bird cannot last too long trying to push an uncooperative egg out without some form of veterinary intervention. They can go rapidly downhill in a very short space of time without assistance, and possibly die without help. If you think your hen is eggbound place it in a warm cage or box and seek the assistance of an avian vet. Some overbred hens lacking in calcium can also produce a soft shelled egg that they find hard to pass. Either way, it will require help from a vet. Good luck with your hen.
