New Budgie Friend

Well, I got a buddy for my approximate 4 month old budgie Casper. How will I know when it is safe to leave them together in a cage. I initially completely changed Casper's cage around so that it was a new surrounding for him, and then I put the new budgie in a small cage beside Casper's cage. I have put the new budgie in with Casper and Casper is spending his time chasing the new budgie (sorry no name yet) around the cage or jumping around the cage in excitement. He will sit beside the new guy/girl, and then go play with some toys and then go back to where the new budgie is pick at his feathers a bit. The new budgie will sometimes stay there and peck back a bit or he will move away. There has been squaaking and some chirping between the two, but I don't know how to tell when it is safe to leave them together. I only have the new budgie in with Casper while I am in the room, otherwise I take the new baby back out and put him in his own cage. Should I be doing this? Or is it to stressful on the little guy/girl? How will I know if it is a real fight or just Casper checking out the new baby. How do I tell if he is hurting him/her? The thing with Casper is that everyone in my house gets bitten by him, he will not tolerate anyone but myself touching him. He is lovey-dovey with me but will bite my husband and my daughters. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Name ideas would be a great help too....(new guy/girl is yellow with green and black spots). I think Casper is jealous of how PRETTY the new budgie is!! ;o)

did you just bring the new budgie home ? if you did you should first quarantine the new budgie in a seperate cage and also in a seperate room away from your other budgie for at least 30 days before introducing them to one another .

I agree quarantine is the first and most important thing you can do. 1. this give you a chance to make sure your new bird is not carrying any underlying illness and 2 it gives you time to get to know your new bird and form a bond.

When I intro Pretty and Merlin I did it gradually. First only during flight time, and then during the day only in the cage together and then after they were doing well which was within a week or so I let them spend the nights together. I didn't put them next to each other often because it just drove them nuts climbing on the cage and I didn't keep one in the cage and the other out to crawl around the cage because I didn't want toes to be injured from possible nipping. If you do this you won't have so much squeaking and fighting. My issue was the Pretty would jump on Merlin's back as to mate but he figured it out pretty quick that Merlin has having none of that. My boys are great friends, we have a squawk maybe 2x a week and if they are both on my finger Pretty seems to like to peck at Merlin so I keep them far enough apart when they are on my fingers. I work on training daily with both of them and stepping up with me.

Do you have pictures is this a little girl or boy?

Aside from the quarantine issue, if you have their cages sitting next to each other, once you notice both birds constantly sitting as close to each other in their respective cages as they can get and they carry on soft warbling sounds instead of regular chirps and squawks, you can consider putting them in the same cage. To avoid any territorial issues though, once you decide to house them together, I would house them in a completely new cage.
