Posted August 22, 200619 yr Homer is around 6yrs old and after recovering from his upset tummy we now have a new problem. Last night at around 10pm and they'd been covered over for about an hour we heard this flapping around, a sqwawk and then just some strained chirping. I went to investigate and Homer was hanging upside down from the trapeze (a woven material one that they've had for years with no probs) by his leg. I called for my partner and he came and got him down and tried to put him on a perch but he couldn't balance so he put him on the floor of the cage and we left him to recover. This morning he was on another perch but right in the corner. When I uncovered them he moved down to the floor (again in the corner) so I put a bowl of seed down there to try to get him to eat. He moved up to the perch and sat for a while with his eyes closed and then moved to another seed bowl and ate some. His foot looks slightly bent and I don't know if maybe it's broken. He seems to be having problems with it although he does seem to be putting weight on it but I think he's in pain. I've tried phoning the vet to see if the avian guy is due in today but they don't know and have given me his mobile number and I really don't want to see anybody else because I'm sure that they'll just suggest putting him to sleep. This is the 2nd time now that he's appeared to fall off his perch and I'm frightened there's an underlying problem, either that or trhe younger bird with him is pushing him or maybe unbalancing him. Can anybody give me any ideas as to what might've happened? What do I do if I can't get to see the avian vet? I'm sorry this is so long but I'm really worried and feeling totally helpless! Edit: I've managed to contact the avian vet and he says he'll fit me in around 11. He also said that he thought it might be a stroke ................... I'm in bits. I really don't want to lose my poor little bird!! Edited August 22, 200619 yr by Jemini
August 22, 200619 yr I've seen the vet and he says that it's not a stroke but that he's badly sprained his foot. He gave him an injection to help relieve the spasms and some pain killer. The vet appeared to be more worried about Homer's weight loss tho' and any possible underlying problems. He wants me to phone him on Thursday with an update. At the moment Homer is quite wobbly on his legs and is trying to eat from the small rimmed bowl of food I put down for him - well actually he's sitting in it and trying to eat. I suppose I've just got to wait and see
August 22, 200619 yr Just woke up here in the U.S. and read this I am glad he is doing okay. Will keep the little guy in our thoughts with the sprained leg . His weight worried he is too light by how much?
August 22, 200618 yr :fear needs lots of my hommer is 3 months old and just learning to fly Doh! but yours needs lots of hope he gets better soon
August 23, 200618 yr Need loads of hugs today .................... after visiting the vet and making sure Homer was comfortable I took my son out to buy him some new school trousers. When we got home Homer had died. I phoned the vet to tell him what had happened and he was really surprised but said that maybe the stress of the trip to see him, the original accident, the injection etc had just been too much ................. but Homer is used to being handled and he went to the other vet about his upset tum only a fortnight ago and wasn't particularly stressed then. Did I do something wrong, could I've done more?? I suppose, and maybe this sounds nasty, but when I went to the vet I was expecting the worst and expecting him to ask me to make THE decision. At least we didn't have to go through that. I really hate the thought of having to make the decision over whether an animal lives or dies so at least that side of it took it's natural course. I just wish I could've done more!! :glare: My poor baby!
August 23, 200618 yr Oh no.....I'm so sorry to hear that your baby had died! What a shock!!! Keep your chin up....you did everything you could! :glare:
