Budgie Breeding ?

Featured Replies

Posted

We have budgies that my daughter lets play in her room while she is doing her homework.

If we decide to put a nesting box in one of the cages, do we still let them play each day as usual? Or would it be better not to disturb them.

Also our budgies don't like fresh greens or cuttlefish.

Is a bird vitamin added to the seed enough?

When we started adding vitamins to the seed twice a week, the female's cere colour changed from very pale to a dark brown. Does that mean she needed some vitamins? She is three years old.

No keep playing with them. They won't mind at all.

Additional vitamins to the seed is fine so long as it is at the correct dosage. It should be on the pack. Don't use the seed for 24 hours after you mix it. It gives it time to soak into the seed. Alway mix it well. Check the mix you are using to see if it has all the needed vitamins and calcium. Some don't.

The change in the cere colour is due to her hormonal changes asshe is coming into season.

At three years old and never bred before, you may have some trouble. Just keep an eye on her.

Thanks Daz,

I am a bit worried that I may have purchased someone else's problem bird.

I didn't know how the colors of the rings corresponded to the age of the bird. I must admit I was a bit surprised when I contacted the local budgie group and they told me the bird was three years old.

How long have you had this bird. It maybe that she has been breeding and that the chicks don't meet the breeder's expectations. If this is the case she would be okay to breed.

I'd contact the local budgie group, give them her ring number and they maybe able to track down the breeder. You could get more information that way.

All my rings are registered and any one with my chicks can track them back to me.

Hi Daz,

We have had the bird for three months.

I did give the local club her ring number and they spouted privacy laws at me. All they said was the breeders suburb and the birds age.

I might contact them again and ask them to pass on my email to the breeder. That might work.

This is normal. Some breeders don't want to be found. It's a pitty.

At least you have the age.

I contacted the local budgie group and she was chilly.

She told me to stop bothering her as she wasn't interested in people with their budgie problems. And if I made the mistake of purchasing a bird from a wholesaler and not a breeder then I should expect to get what I paid for. RUBBISH.

Poor bird, she isn't rubbish! She's lovely.

I think I will approach another group for membership. I am so glad I found out what the tone of the group is before I introduced my 11 year old to them.

I will put that one down to experience.

Aww there are some like that out there :sigh: I hope there is another group around you to join if you are wanting to move into the show side of things.

Also keep in mind that is only one person in the group, although I do know how you feel, I met one important member of my local club and he really put me off from joining that group, since then I've met a normal member and he was really friendly and willing to help.

i have to agree with nerwen there might be some nice people in the group we have to remember youngsters are our future in the hobby can you give me the name of the club and person please and if this person has an email pm me them dont put them out on the forum

In our club the experienced breeders help the new comers. Pity about other clubs. :(

I would never use their real name on the internet. That would be extremely unfair and I certainly wouldn't want someone to do it to me, so I wouldn't do it to anyone else.

I am sure my daughter can pursue her interest elsewhere.

Hath was asking you do give the info to him in a Private Message. It's like an email on the forums only you and him will see the info.

as i said youngsters are our future and an email from another club could have a desired effect that this person does not frighten people off this hobby
