Posted August 18, 200618 yr I work at a pet resort and bird sanctuary and some wild budgies managed to find their way there. I'm guessing they either escaped from someone's home or were simply let go. They've been hanging around my work for several months now. A normal blue male and a normal green female. They won't let you touch them, but they aren't afraid of people. So today I was walking the dogs and I heard the chirps of the budgies. I usually walk up and talk to them, and then I also feed them. I walked over to the tree they usually sit in expecting to see them, but to my surprise, it was a different budgie! A yellowface with a bright blue body and it was a baby. I then started listening more closely and realized I could hear several budgies coming from several trees. I also found a pied budgie that looked to be mostly white with some spots of blue. I say there were at least 5 or 6 budgies. Maybe more. I think the 2 budgies that have been there for months had babies! It would be too coincidental for all these budgies to make there way to the resort. So now I'm surrounded by a colony of them. But they aren't at all afraid of people. I just find it ironic that of all the places for them to turn up, they find their way to a bird sanctuary (Laughing out loud).
August 18, 200618 yr that is interesting and with the warm weather all year round in TX I wonder if they will survive and continue to breed?
August 18, 200618 yr Author I hope they all survive. I had no idea they would actually breed, but apparently they did. It's kinda cool having them around all the time.
August 18, 200618 yr Is it a HUGE aviary? As in a meshed in area with trees and such? OR free trees on your property? That sounds unique (Laughing out loud). Must be cool! Kirby
August 18, 200618 yr Author No it's not an aviary. They just live in the trees on the property. It's 3 1/2 acres and a large wooded area borders one side of the property. There are aviaries on the property for the macaws and cockatoos, but the parakeets just roam free with the other native wild birds.
August 18, 200618 yr That sounds wonderful - it is great the these two have managed to not only survive in the wild but also thrive. It gives a little ray of hope to all those out there who might have lost a budgie and thought it wouldn't survive.
