Sick Budgie

Hi

I do regular inspections of my birds but did not see this one coming. I thought this female was in breading condition until half her cere stayed the darker brown & the other half changed back to a flesh colour.

Here is some photos.

Can anyone confirm that this is Scaley Beak or is it something else? Also sleeps a lot & breathes heavy.

I would say yes and her nasal passages are probably clogged.

I would say encourage you to get her into the vet because that type of breathing is not normal. Also 1 more thing separate her from your other birds until you know exactly what is wrong. You will probably have to treat them all for the scaley face, I remember Bea had to treat her whole aviary even though only 1 showed signs.

That looks like scaley face to me! Ring an avian vet and ask if they can give you some ivermectin. It should cost about $10 for a small bottle with an eye dropper. One drop behind their neck (like dog flea treatment) and then repeat treatment 2 weeks later. I had one budgie come down with really bad scaley face and the little bottle treated all 26 (at the time) of my budgies twice and i still had enough to do it all again if another got it. :)

I would also be weary of the rust on that cage if I was you. If the budgie chews on it she could get very sick...

Thanks everyone, I started treating straight away with Dettol Antiseptic which is a little trick I picked up a few years ago. It gets rid of the Scaley Face when you treat every day for a week.

Anyway she appears to be responding & is a little happier now.

When I took the photos I thought someone would comment on the rust. Be assured I only left her there for about 30 minutes whilest I cleaned out my hospital cage.

I see it was so focused on the cere I didn't even look at the background, I would totally pitch that cage not even for 30 mins is it safe :)

:ausb: Even without my glasses on, it looks like mites. :ausb:
