Is That Normal?!

Hello,

I am new to all of this... i have had my little Pippin for 3 months now (he is 7 months old) and oh so cute... i wish i knew how to add a photo!

Pippin does this really strange thing ... he will just be standing on his perch or ladder and just start flapping his wings (its very noisy!! ) its not like he is off balance or anything... he just leans back a little and flapps away for a few seconds... has a rest and then does it again!! This will only last a little while... but i would say he does it daily!

Is he just stretching?! I think he is pretty healthy... playing will all his toys and eating really well!!!

Any ideas? Thanks :o

That's just him burning some extra energy. :o

Does Pippin come out of the cage to fly? Bluey used to do that before he was allowed out.:o

My budgies have a daily flapping session in their cage - think they are just having a strech - sometimes it's a hint to Mummy that they want to come out and play, teeheeee.....

I find if Pretty or Merlin don't have fly time that day that is when they do it and it is usually in the later afternoon or evening.

Stitch does that when he's out and about too .. it's the weirdest feeling when he hangs onto your finger and flaps his wings really hard like he's trying to take you for a fly too.

He's also become adept at budgie slaps where he sits on your shoulder facing sort of backwards and slaps you in the face with a wing.

Thanks guys for all the help!

I open the cage door whenever i am in the room so he can come and go when he pleases.... but usually i have to put my hand in and get him out! (he is getting better at that!) Once he is out... he is great... the man at the pet shop told me i should get his wings clipped... so his flying leaves alot to be desired!!! he ususally just flaps his wings to soften his landing! When he is out he just sits on my shoulder or hand... flys to the ground occasionally... i am currently waiting for his flight feathers to come back (how long does this take?)

Oh well... glad it all sounds normal and healthy! I get a little paranoid that he is sick sometimes... (when really he is fine!) just because the closest Avain vet is about 5hours away :)

Ahh clipped wings means he isn't getting a lot of wing excerise even out of the cage so flapping them while still gripping the cage is all he can really do right now. The time for feathers to re grown depends on what point of the moult cycle he was at. The moult on average twice a year some do so more others less.

:parrot: Yes... my little girl!! - (i recently found out thanks to all you guys.... all this time iwas calling him a boy!!)

He is having a pretty HUGE moult at the moment... little feathers everywhere!! (i hope this is normal at 7 months :S) He has lots of little "pin feathers" ?? is that what they are called?! New feathers anyway are coming thick and fast... I think he might be getting more blue aswell.. compared to when i first got him/her !! :)

so you think girl huh!?!?! :P

Yes she is, the adult feathers are more riich in colour to the baby ones and yes pin feathers are what they are called. At age 7 months is average for them to have a moult.

She is a cutie, and in the picture looks like she knows it :(Laughing out loud):

Isn't she a darling. :ausb: Bluey is about the same age and she has lots of pin feathers too. I did read that you could preen/rub them for her if she'll let you because they're covered in a substance called keratin that another bird would normally preen for them. Bluey won't let me.

We just realised our Bluey is a girl too. My 11yo is calling her Gluey now (B for boy, G for girl :ausb: )

I have tried "preening" her... sometimes she will let me... It's so cute... she has a little hanging bell in her cage and she uses it to scratch around her neck.. its adorable and she chatters along as she is doing it! Sometimes when she is out on my lap i just put my finger on the back of her neck gently and she moves her head around... and closes her eyes like she is getting sleepy... its so CUTE!!! :(

Noone in my family has ever had birds before and this is m y first one... so i am like the nervous mother here!!!!

hehehhe

I think my boy Shadow is starting to moult too? He looks like he is having a bad hair day and is being very grumpy to his cage mate.

My birds will grip the perch and flap like mad too, and they are flighted and out of the cage a good deal of the time. I think they just like it. :)

Ohhh that is just normal budgie behavior! No need to worry about that. When I first had mine before I let them fly around--they did that to exercise their wings. They also did it when their wing feathers were coming in since they were clipped before I got them. Anyway...it can be a signal that they want out to stretch their wings and fly and as I call it--JUST BE BIRDS!

No worries...just normal wing flapping. I love watching it!

Scooter does that too. Usually in the morning after he eats, he'll flap his wings a little bit to stretch them out and is ready to come out of the cage pretty soon after that. He lets me know when he's ready to come out cause he'll start running around the cage. And as soon as the door opens, he's outta there and takes several laps around my bedroom. He loves his morning fly. :dbb1:
