Hello! I'm New :)

Hey guys! I'm Jessica and I just bought my first budgie, Scooter. I'm not sure how old he is, but he's a baby and he's very sweet. I've got a few questions since I'm still very new to budgies.

I'm pretty sure he's a "he", though at this age it's a bit hard to tell. There are no white rings around his nostrils so I don't think it's a girl. Any more experienced budgie owners wanna help me confirm if it's a he or she? Also, I've only had him a week, but I've already got him pretty handtamed. He knows the "UP" command now, and pretty much learned that within the first 2 days. I was told he was not handtamed, so I guess I got a really smart one (Laughing out loud). I've started letting him out of his cage, but he doesn't go far. Just sits on his perch on the outside of the cage and looks around. How long does it normally take for them to get comfortable outside the cage? And he's also very quiet. Every once in awhile he'll chirp, but it's rare for him to make any sounds at all. Is this normal? Will he eventually start singing more?

And can anyone tell me what color type he is? He has a yellow face and has a light blue body (even though it looks more green in the picture, it's actually blue).

Here's a picture of Scooter, and thanks for all the helpful info on the site! :hap:

Hiya, Scooter is absolutely gorgeous! I'm rubbish at telling if they are boys/girls but i would guess girl. (I am totally guessing, someone who has a clue will probably post later! :hap:)

to me scooter i think is a boy? but he is a young bird because of his black bars on its head i guess anything from 3 months - 6months. but there are lots more on our forum that have more knowledge than me. scooter looks yet another cutie.keep up with the hand taming . bobbyness :hap:

It's pritty hard to tell but I think Scooter is a girl. Since the bars are still so close to the beak the fact the cere looks blueish now is more of a girls trait. Boys have a strong pink colour.

As to what her colouroing is : she is a yellowface. Do the wings have yellow on them as well? If she she is type 2 if not type 1. The difference is the type two will gain more green as they groow up where as the type one only has yellow on the face area.

Thanks for the welcome guys! :hap: No yellow on his wings. They are just gray and white, but on the underside there is some yellow either on his tail or flight feathers. I can't tell which feathers for sure. I guess it'll just be a waiting game until his first molt to really know his true sex. I'm still gonna him a "he" for now. He has more mannerisms of a boy I guess. He doesn't chew and doesn't bite (I heard females are better known for doing this). The picture doesn't really do justice to his true color cause it's dark, but his cere is not really blue at all, even though it kinda looks it in the picture. It's actually purple/pink.

He flew for the first time today. I let him out twice and he took a couple trips around my bedroom and enjoys sitting on the ceiling fan blades. He started chirping very happy chirps. And he was very good about going back in his cage. He was up a little too high to use my finger, but he got on his perch when I asked him to. I think we are making alot of progress for it being only the first week. :P

You are doing fantastic!! Congrats! You will have a beautifully tamed budgie before you know it :P It does take them a while to get used to their new surroundings and all the behaviour you noted seems normal for a baby. He sounds like he is starting to come around a bit now so you should start seeing a change in his personality soon!!

He is just gorgeous!! Make sure you get heaps of pics at this age cause they grow up so fast!! :hap:

The purplish cere that you noted makes me think he is a boy - perhaps if you can get another picture in some more natural light, we should be able to tell for sure :P

He is so very cute! I think he very much looks like a boy. :) As far as his type, type 2 yellowface skyblue. His coloring is much to turquoise to be a type 1. You can't really tell by the biting, I've found girls will bite hard and quickly then be done with it if they want to bite, and boys will bite and keep grinding away at your flesh without a break. :o
