Chico And Ariel...

Hey guys!

Remember my Chico and Ariel? They had 3 other clutches of infertile eggs becuase Chico was to afraid of her (shes VERY dominant) and hes VERY timid towards other birds. Finally, he built up his confidence, so i added the nest box about 2 weeks ago. She wasnt interested at first which shocked me becuase nromally she LOVEs to play in them... So i almost took it out. Until one day i went in and i see her in it all day. She was kicking out all the shavings i added, and she carved more out so shes very pleased. Yesterday, i saw both get very excited sexually, and Chico mounted 3 times. (first 2 were backwards, then the last one, Chico only put 1 foot on her back, but wiggled his but under her tail, until he lost balance 1 second later). So, what im wondering is if sperm can he shot or do the cloacas have to touch? My freind told me it can be flung, so i hope :(

Her poop got noticably bigger yesterday alone, soo.... any day now (im guessing 3 days about...) ill have eggs. Whether or not they are fertile, hopefully they are.. Thanks guys! Heres pics of their nestbox i made them (i carved it out with hammer and shizzle), then a new shot of them sectioned off in the big cage (the top)...

I don't really know when the other 3 clutches took place.. but are you sure you're giving them enough of a break in between. It doesn't seem like it's been very long since the last breeding attempt.

:D Well having had a bad experience with Munchkin and my foot, all i can say is that Munchkin shoots  HAHAAAA now i keep him away from my toes, hands well any skin basically as much as possible :hap:

OMG UNA I wouldn't have thought it was possible :(Laughing out loud):

The rubbing to spoke about is them touching cloacas and what you want to see more of.

I'm wondering when the last time was too, I know they were infirtle but the laying off eggs still take calium out of the hen.

BAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHA UNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hap: :P :P (Laughing out loud)

Their last 'clutch' was about 2 months ago, if not more... then the other ones were at least a month apart. She eats her cuttlebone like a good girlie, and i give them Prime avian supplement (powder you add in their water), and she also likes her iodine orange mineral block :) Shes one of the only birds that eat all 3, when most only eat cuttle and the Prime enriched water... I also give them carrots, romain lettuce, cucumber, grass, and celery daildy (usually 2 things a day, then i alternate)... Is this a good routine right? They are all gorgeous, and moult VERY fast with new BRILLIANT colours :D

So Una says they do shoot ( :P ) but everyone else says they cant, and the eggs wont be fertile? I bet she still has 3-5 more days before eggs as poop just started getting bigger the other day, but shes been in the nest 30min out of an hour, so almost all the time, just digging around, and carving out the nest more than what i did becuase its made out of real wood...

Kirby :)

:P LMAO Kirby ill lend you Munchkin for a while so you can see for yourself if you like :hap: :P I soooooooooo need to find him a girlfriend :P
:)

Kirby I love the nest box - it looks like something they would use in the wild! Very impressive!! :)

(Laughing out loud) thanks guys :P

Thats why they love it SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH becuase its natural and Ariels really lovin it! Chicos REALLY perked up, and hes VERY flirty this time around, which i think is becuase of the natural happy energy Ariels giving off him from her nest which she adores... Thats what i think anyways :hap: (Laughing out loud)

Poops VERY big today, so i think any day now ill see egg(s) :P Hopefully they are fertile *PLEASE PRAY*

Kirby :P

Kirby, the cloacas need to touch, and for more than a second, LOL. But they should begin mating frequently and he will improve with practice. Your first egg won't occur until about 10 days after mating starts and she decides she likes the box which it sounds like she just started to make it hers. If any are laid before then they most likely will be infertile because matings have not been successful. She should not be holding poo in yet...that normally only happens after she begins staying in the box - after the second egg. But even after she starts laying they will continue to mate until she is finished laying the clutch.

My fingers are crossed for you!

Thanks sooo much Rainbow! I REALLY need your prayers. Regardless, if these eggs are infertile or not, im going to let her rest 2 weeks to a month more after these eggs (if they dont hatch) then try again becuase Chicos VERY good this time, but i think your right, he missed/ is missing his chances to get them fertile even though some attempts are VERY close  Then, im sure of it next time i put them together, they will have babies, then i will stop them after that single clutch if they do in deed have babies becuase thats to much strain on her, and i dont want her to die from me wanting babies :( Shes been digging in box past week now, made the entrance hole more circular (when i made it, a peice chipped off, and made a weird bump in it which she didnt like), and theyve been in a very good mood since i put them togethr :) Will keep you posted, but as Rainbow said, i think this will be another case of Chico having bad balance, not mating properly, and missing the fertilization period :( Who knows though right? Maybe the last egg will be fertile? Please pray guys!

UPDATE:

So they mated again, several times, but none were successful (he was feeding when he was on her back instead of banging :P ) (Laughing out loud). So i moved them into their own cage with their little log nest, and i look up, Chico was on for a good 2 minutes!!!! (he did loose balance 3 or 4 times, but got right back on in 5 seconds!) His tail was under her more than ive ever seen him do before, and i think he may have fertilzed eggs this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her bottom is swollen, and from the prvious time, that means an egg in 1-3 days now... I just REALLY hope that he did in deed fertilze at least 1 baby this time :) As Chico is the oldest bird i have now, and hes the last i have that i kept from my origional pair when i was 10. So, since hes getting to be 4, i need him to have at least 1 baby for me to keep to keep his blood lines going so i can always have the genes of my very first pair within my flock. Hes such a great singer, very colourful, non-biter, semi-freindly out of cage, but very freindly in cage, and overall im going to miss him so much when he passes :D But in the mean time, hopefully he raises great strong children with the gorgeous Ariel, and hopefully *** live to be 10 like his father did :D

ps- Ariel in nest diggin' some more, while Chico is on front 'porch' i mean perch ( :P ) singing like a champ! Please keep them in your prayers that well have babies this time, Ariel, Chico, and I want them to more than any pair of birds ive ever seen or heard of in my life...

Yes thanks Nerwen!

I think it is to! Her bottom is VERY swollen now, and her vent is partially opening, and shes making Chico feed her (Ariels in her nest with face sticking out)... So by morning egg 1 will be here!

Yes, Chico for SURE is getting WAYYY BETTER as he builds confidence, and as their bond got much tighter, Chicos not as afraid of doing things such as feeding, sleeping near her, mounting around her becuase she use to hate him, then overnight she pretty much fell for him and wanted babies :) So, hopefully fertile eggs will be 'born' in my cool little nest, and ill have a baby to keep to carry out Chicos bloodlines who are very importnant to me as his parents were my 1st bird(s), and they were my first pet(s) that were actually mine  Thanks

Kirby :D

I hope the new nest and improved mating skills will help you with a clutch. I'll be watching for updates.

Hey guys!

Ariel layed her first egg for this clutch today!!!! :hap: She layed it in her log nest in which she loves, and shes got enough room to sit on it. The egg stays in the middle, so it looks like i did in deed notch a good centre groove :P (Laughing out loud) Will keep you posted, and when should i candle it? Day 5? I hope SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BADLY at least ONE is fertile. Chico has gotten MUCH better at 'mating', and his tail looked like it might have fertilized her vent a few times... So im hoping, and gods getting TONS OF PRAYERS about these eggs from me :) (Laughing out loud)

Kirby :hap:

Lots of luck this time Nathan :hap: If you get so excited about your budgie babies, I can only imagine what you would be like in the waiting room of a labour ward when you have real babies one day :) You deserve some success with Chico and we are all behind you waiting :P

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww  Thanks Mate! :)

Thanks a lot, and yes, im kinda worried what my wife will think of me acting like a nutso when we have babies (possibly twins becuase i was a twin but he didnt make it, i hogged the food :P ). Thanks about me deserving the success to mate! Ive spent TONS of my time tending to their every needs since i was 8 when i first started breeding, and think its about time i REALLY get paid off, and have my past year of breeding Chico to Ariel pay off regarding a nice healthy clutch of recessive pied bubs  (Laughing out loud)

Shes on the lil eggie... Chicos VERY HAPPY!!!! Ive never seen him so happy EVER in my life, and he has NOT stopped singing, feeding, and looking out for anything he can do for Ariel to make this clutch easy on her  Hes a great 'dad' to the eggs and Ariel, so i hope his hard efforts work this time..

Thanks a bunch Lisa!

What makes you think its more promising? I just want to hear the reasons to make sure im telling you things (as in if i say one word wrong it may make you feel it wont or will work, so im just wondering why you think the eggs will be fertile? (Laughing out loud)) Thanks

Kirby :P

Fingers crossed agian. Candle at day 5 if you don't see anything you can try the next day.

Thanks Nerwen!

okay guys... She started to incubate it when it was laid... then i wake up, and shes been out of the box A LOT :P Its warm here, but not that hot that she shouldnt sit on it i dont think  Chicos been singing to her, and trying to mate with her the whole time. Shes sat on the entrance perch, looking inside... Oops, she just went in it now and Chico is on front perch looking in. There is a big poop in the nest that was NOT there lastnight, and the poop is already completly dried so she must have been in it at night then right, then just got out before i woke up? Im nervous now, becuase not only am i worrying about if they will be fertile, im also worried if she might abandone the egg(s)... Will keep you posted. The eggs looks darker than the others... kinda a pinkish beige colour, but more pink then brown... so it that becuase its new? Or becuase its fertile or infertile? Her other infertile eggs were bright white....?

ps- Ariels out of the box again

Thanks guys

Kirby :)

Be glad you don't have finches then Nathan.... they wait til they've laid at least 4 eggs and then finally sit on the nest so that all the chicks are close in size. I imagine that there's a little leeway in the time the egg is laid and the time the female needs to sit on it, even for budgies.

Yes your right Lisa... I know several members on the forum whos birds dont lay until 2-3 eggs are laid, i just got scared becuase Ariel normally sits RIGHT away, so i paniced, but she is now on it all day, and is bing a good gurlie... So lets hope! The newest thought is what if she adles the egg(s)? Since the box is about 6" circular diameter... every time she enters the nest, she may land on the eggs, or bump them... Ive seen her get in, and not even touch the eggs at all, but when there are more eggs (i think shell lay 5 or 6) she may have no choice but land on them :D Well see, im trying not to worry, and let nature take its course :P (Laughing out loud)

Well, Harley and Rose kicked their eggs around like soccer balls and 2 out of 5 hatched, so there's hope. Did you drill the perch hole right through and allow some of the perch inside the box? That helps. :) But, Nathan....don't worry so much. Whatever will be will be :P
