Paper Towel Roll

I accidently left a roll of Paper towel standing upwards on the table in my bird room while Tweety and her boyfriend were free flying. Which was silly, as I know Tweety loves sitting on top and chewing at the paper, annd I went outside to get something and got waylaid doing something else and when I came back, I went to put the birds back in their cage, but could not find tweety, she likes playing hide and seek. As I was lifting everything up calling her, I noticed the paper towel laying on the table and went to pick it up to put outside, and poor Tweety was under it, on her back, flat as a tack:fear . Panic, I grabbed her rubbed her chest, still breathing and clicking her tongue, gave her a few drops of warm water and honey. Well all vets were closed 1.30pm sat. Took her to our local pet shop (she breeds and trains birds) and said Tweety was in shock and maybe had a slight heart attack. Placed her in a cage in a seperate room with no through traffic, covered her and put a 40watt lamp over her, for 48 hours (alternating between 40 watt and 20 watt if she got too hot) Well she is now back with her boyfirend all lovey dovey, But she wont step-up or attemtp to leave her cage anymore . Probably still stressed out, but Bazza is busy feeding her and kissing her better

So please be careful where you leave rolls of paper towel or anything that can fall on your bird

I was lucky Tweety survived, it could have been much worse due to a few minutes of carelessness

 the poor lil darling, I wouldnt have even thought about the dangers of a paper towel roll.. I hope she recovers fully and its great her little man is looking after her so well

oh my goodness thats awful!! i would never have thought of that either. Hope she makes a speedy recovery.

This is a full one I assume because an empty one would be too light.

What an experience - I am glad she is okay.

The roll was 3/4 full, Lovey.

She is still not her usual self. Sleeps a lot. Very snappy if I put my hand in the cage, (I think she blames me  )

Bazza is still feeding and preening her, but her poos are still a bit green and slighlty runny sometmes.

I have put some avi-vite water suluble vitamin, mineral and amino acid supplement in her water, but just wonder if I should give her something else. The shock will probably affect for a while longer.

It is upsetting seeing her so changed

when I was reading it I thought you were going to say she got stuck on the inside which I am sure is another thing to worry about. Keep us updated.

She still hates my hand, but has started tweeting and chattering with Baz today. They have been talking none stop this morning, so I hope that is a good sign. Pooeys are still a bit on the yukky side though.

I wouldn't think paper roll is so dangerous either :)

Hope she will get better and stops being scared of your hand

I would say the best way to have them play with a paper or toilet paper roll is to cut it down the side so it can not hold them inside the tube. That may have been mentioned but adding again. Therefore they can have the fun of tunneling if they like but not getting stuck at all.
