Natural Perches

I just went out and collected a few gum tree branches for Blinkie and Ozzie and i'm about to rinse them but i also wanted to put them in the oven like a lot of people have suggested. I have looked around but so far can't find how long and at what temperature you're supposed to do this so if anyone knows and would like to tell me, i'd really appreciate it! :(

I did my perches for 30 minutes on 250 degrees F stay and watch them to ensure they don't catch on fire :).

I just had images of you Lovey sitting in the kitchen staring at the oven watching branches bake!!! :P

I was :(Laughing out loud): I was so scared I was going to burn the house down.

The good thing is the branches I did in the spring are still in excellent condition. They have peeled the bark off on some but there is still alot to be desired before I have to replace. My 2 are not huge chewers but more of preeners.

:P never put my gum trees in the oven  a bit big I think

they say there very good for them but the birds we breed were not breed in the wild

and the bird seed and cuttlebone and shell grit should be enough for them also greens included

most budgies that live in the wild fly around in flocks of 200.000 or more mostly breeding the wet season

so if you can imagine there would be a lot dead gums with millions of budgies stripping them bare

we don't have gum trees here in Ohio :(Laughing out loud): so I don't even know what they look like big or small. I used maple from my backyard :P

:P

Baked gum tree branches make the house smell lovely!!! :D

I use natural wood perches too, yet, because I’m a city boy, no backyard and no putting perches in the oven for me!

I simply go to the pet store and buy them… ;)

Then I put rings on them or hang other toys from them, and the budgies seem to like it!

Here are some pics:

I want to make some like that for myself but i'm not entirely sure i'm handy enough. Could someone please tell me the NAMES of the bits i'd need to buy so i can go to a hardware store and not have to say i need a screwy bit and a couple of holdy bits and then the one that keeps it together!! :D

Bunnings have them they are furniture threads. One end is a normal thread for a nut the other is a coach type thread for going into the branch.

...any help.. :P:D

:ausb: :(Laughing out loud): :(Laughing out loud): Oh Crikey Bea, I cant stop laughing. I can just picture that poor salesman, it would be like asking for that thingamee-jig that srews into a a thing with another thingamee-jig holding it.

It remingds me of my sister when sje wanted some repairs for the air filter in her car, she asked for "the thing that sat under the hat in the motor"

Cindy

Ha Ha Bea you are so funny. I'm off out today to try and find some branches for Oscar - the vet told me to give them a wash in dilute bleach - do you guys think this is okay?

Yes but make sure you dry them all day in the sun before you use them.

Sun??? we never get any!! Would putting them in the oven do?

It should. Put it on low for about an hour. Keep checking them so you don't cook them.

ha ha thanks a lot - next post will be how i managed to burn down my house! :P

I use natural perches I got from Sundance Feed and Seed to put one in the cage and the other on the outside. It's exactly like the one the first poster showed in the pictures. Good for their feet and it relieves the strain of the horizontal perches when they use them during the day.
