I'm not sure of all the benefits but I read on the internet that eucalyptus leaves provide budgies with a lot of medicinal properties. I give them regularly to my birds and they devour them within days. They absolutely love them and the branches gives them something to chew as they would if they were in the wild.

There are lots of eucalyptus varieties and apparently budgies only like a few of them. We have a tree in our backyard and I was trying Bluey on leaves and he used to have a nibble and then ignore them.

Just before we went away for a week in June (and Bluey went to stay with friends) I bought some leaves, a seed toy and a perch over the internet and I'm told Bluey went ape over the leaves while we were away. He was shredding two a day! :( They did, however, start to turn black because they were not kept in the fridge. I received a message on my phone and I replied and asked them to stop giving them to him and throw them away.

Today, Bluey occasionally nibbles the seed toy and he uses the perch, but is not interested in chewing it. I have a branch from my own tree he now nibbles.

I'm lucky where I live we have many varieties of gum/eucalypt growing around here, my birds always have a branch(half a bush!!) in the aviary they chew, roost in, land on, fall off they love it. I replace it regularly with fresh ones but even when its dried they will still chew on it. I have no idea what exact medicinal properties it has apart from being a natural vegie/plant extract but my birds are all extremely healthy and a few I have got as scruffy unwanted adults are lookng smooth and sophisticated(!!) I usually grab a branch when I go out the bush with the dogs.
