Getting Scared At Night

Featured Replies

Posted

Sometimes I wake up at night, because my budgies get scared or something and fly around their cage like mad. I must turn the light on and wait for them to sit and calm down again. Often I just leave a small light on, so they can see.

It's really worrying me, I don't want them to kill themself.

Do you always leave some light for your budgies at night?

Last time I went to my vet, she told me, that there are problems with lutinos and albinos very often (because the unnatural colour). That they panic easily and are scared at night a lot.

One of my budgies is a lutino.

What do you think about it?

If in a flock one bird has a night fright the other will take to the air as well. Not helpful in a cage where they can harm themselves. I have a solar garden light in the floor of my avairy which lights up the back wall and the ground nicly for them to see but still dark near the top of the cage where they sleep so they are not kept awake. Since putting it in I have not been awoken in the night by them flying like mad. I think the two weeks of not having it in the avairy I was woken up about 5-6 times.

Yes, I'll try to find some light which doesn't shine too much, but gives them some light.

Thanks Nerwen

try a night light they sell them in different colored bulbs or with covers

that is for indoors...of course I just realized you have them outside yes?

Yes, they are outside. But they are on the balcony - next to my bedroom's windows, so when I put the light by the window inside, it's okay for them. Anyway they will go back inside soon, it's getting too cold.

Mine are inside in a cage of course. There was one night when I frightened them out of their wits by moving the blanket covering the cage. They fluttered around and around, etc.! So I realize now they are sensitive to movement, not just light. I now put two light blankets over their cage. The white one I put on first so light from the microwave clock and from the apt hallway will shine through, as well as light from outside. Then I put on the dark blue one for darkness. I don't cover it completely because I found they don't like complete darkness. So I cover it from back and sides, but not the front. My birds seem to like this arrangement.

I have them on my balcony, and I cover them for the night too, but I always leave the side by my windows uncovered, so when they get scared and fly around, I can just turn on a small light and they can see and calm down.

I'm thinking about putting a fish tank light near them, so they have some light at night, it doesn't shine too much and doesn't take too much of electrocity.
