Posted August 7, 200619 yr I think I remember reading somewhere that your normal iceburg lettuce was bad for budgies and was wondering if that was true? And also is there any lettuce to watch out for or to not feed them? Just wondering as Oscar seems to really like lettuce and I just didn't want to feed him something that would poison him. Maybe I'm paranoid, but after losing two budgies recently, I don't want to take any chances. Thanks :feedbirds:
August 7, 200619 yr It is not poisoness it is that it really doesn't have any nutritional value and it can cause runny poops. I use green leaf or romaine if I use any and spinach as a combination because my boys love leafy greens too.
August 7, 200619 yr And lettuce from a shop is sprayed with chemicals very often which is dangerous for birds. My budgies love lettuce too, they always roll in it Edited August 7, 200619 yr by Zebra
August 8, 200619 yr Washed Lettuce is not too bad but just don't give it to them. As lovey said it does give them runny poops. Endive is a good substitute.
August 8, 200619 yr I am at the point where I never buy iceburg lettuce for myself anymore unless it is included in those precut, prewashed salad packs (lazy me). The only time I get it is when I get a burger from a fast food outlet. My birds like romaine, butter, endive, red leaf, anything is better than iceburg which is basically water.
