Vitamin D

I have just put my birds down in my shed, there is no direct sunlight and I don't have artificial lighting. I'm wondering how long my birds can be like this without the lack of sunlight causing vitamin D deficiency.

Bruce

Bruce mix some Cod liver oil in with their seed. 5ml to 500grams. This will give them Vitamin A & D.

Hi Daz, thanks for that. I did read that cod liver oil is high in polyunsaturated fats which depletes vitamin E.

Yes I have heard that. I also give my flock vitamins for 4 days every 4 weeks. They also have a constant supply of Murphy's Minerals and Fresh vegatables.

But you do have to becareful of over dosing on vitamins.

It's a bit of a delicate balance, not something easily fixed with a supplement. Sunlight is best and you only need just a small amount of it each day in order for it to be effective. Could you get a large, spare cage and put them in there (supervised, of course) for a few minutes a day?

What are good vegetables? I give greens but I've heard that certain veges contain different nutrients.

Sprouted seed are good for protien.

I use grated carrot, corn kernels, celery, mung bean sprouts and snow pea sprouts.
