Why Are All My Chicks Female?!

My avairy is full of hens. Whenever I breed i end up with all hens or all except 1! I really need more males for breeding purposes, but it just is'nt happening.

For example out of 9 clutches that I remember acurately 32 were hens and 5 were males. Is it somthing to do with the temperature? At the moment I have 14 hens and 5 cocks. This is just getting ridiculous! Is'nt gender ment to be split evenly!

I seemed to have the same problem when I bred last time! In some species of egg layers, temp of eggs does determine the sex of the hatchling, but i have no idea if birds are one of them. I would suggest it is strongly possible though! :)

I have the same problem but in reverse :D I only seem to be able to breed boy baby budgies !! Well, very few females by comparison anyway....same odds as yourself but the reverse problem. I f we lived near each other we could swap babies :)

Same here, I always end up with only a couple of hens, and it's much the same for alot of people

over where I live.

It has been hard to find decent hens for a while now.

Mmm, have just done some research here

Basically, from a quick read, the female decides the sex of the baby dependant upon food supply Plenty of good quality food - females hatched, less food or poorer quality - males hatched

:D Well, going on the quality and quantity of food at my place......that theory gets blown to smithereens !! :)

Bubbles you are starving them (Laughing out loud) :):

At the rate of 10 kilos of seed per week plus vegies and greens..........YES...they are definitely on the lean side, my birds :)

I must say that my birds tend to breed hens over cocks at a rate of about 3 to 1. I always seem to be trying to sell excess hens! :(

The thought that more males hatch with poorer quality food doesn't make me feel that great. I want my birds to have the best of everything especially the breeding budgies. :)
