Help : Pixie Has A Broken/crushed Leg

Featured Replies

Please help. Pixie, a six year old blue male has hurt his leg. He flew down suddenly and got his leg caught under a chair as it was being pushed out. What do we do for a damaged leg? He usually talks with vocab of about 50 words but is NOT Happy or talking or singing. Obviously in pain!!! Claw on damaged leg doesnt grip right. He is holding on to purch but is wobbly on the bad leg?

Hope someone can help. We love him and want to get it right!!!!

Urgently get him to an avian vet - he needs painkillers, and a splint. In the meantime, put him in a small cage, with food and water handy, without having to move. Pop a lamp on to provide heat - in shock, as the poor little mite will be, their body temperature drops! Let us know how the poor little one goes

do you have a 24 hr vet in your area that would be the frist thing find and take him too. If not you need to keep him warm and quiet for hte night to get him to your avain vet first thing in the morning! I remember reading that egg white will dry hard like a cast for little bird legs, but becuase of shock (which is something to be VERY watchful for) I wouldn't want to be trying things and handling him much at all. Put a branch very low to the ground on the cage so if he do fall it will not be far.

There isn't anything you can give for pain to a bird with out correct dosage which only a vet can do. ( if there is any.)

Thanks Lin @ Nerwen,

GOOD ADVICE,

Pixie now in his little travel cage with low perch and covered with blanket and he is finally making some chirps.

Also climbing around a little ;)

No Avian vets here, not even general vets working 14 hours but I figure you guys probably know more than the local vet anyway, that is why I made the post.

keep you posted

cheers

Pixies Mother

Take him off to the vet anyway tomorrow - he will need his leg splinting. Some antibiotics might be in order too, if the leg is actually injured as well. See if there are some pain killers you can administer, this will be very painful. Keep him in a smaller cage til it heals - you need to restrict his movement! good luck!

Lin and Nerwen gave you good advice, please keep us updated on Pixie.

:budgiedance: Poor little Pixie :budgiedance: , hope everything is working out with the vet and you got some sort of splint and pain medication. :budgiedance:

Vets should be opening now, wonder how the poor little tyke is going? Lucky he's got such a good and concerned owner!

Thank-you everyone for concerns and help for Pixie. :budgiedance:

Went to vet first thing this morning. Vet said that following Lin and Nerwen's advice last night saved Pixie's life!!!!!! So THANK YOU to you both from Pixie and all who love him!!!! :D

Vet said keep it up - small, warm, covered cage heated with lamp for atleast 4 days.

She did not want to splint/pin leg as it would be too painful. She offered to do xrays but Pixie would have had to have a general anestetic and as he is a VERY small budgie that could be dangerous for his life so I said NO!!!

Advice from Currumbin Bird Sancturary to Vet was NOT to interfear and not to give antibiotics but let Pixie heal naturally. :budgiedance:

Vet said Pixie a very determined little fellow, and was amazed that he wanted to walk (all be it with a limp like a peg-leg pirate!!!). Advised that we should definetly restrict his space to move for a few days to keep him OFF bad leg so it can heal straight.

It is a teribbly cold and wet day here today but he is happily and quietly basking under the lamp as I write.

I will keep you posted on progress? :budgiedance:

:budgiedance: So happy that your little one is doing okay! :budgiedance:

Sounds like he's a regular little hero - walking on a broken leg - ouch! So pleased all is well, when do we get to see pics of the walking wounded???

not sure how to attach photos yet, but once I have I will try to post some of Pixie the brave!!

There is a linked post in the photo section. Basically, you need to get a free account with something like photobucket, then upload your pics to there. Then copy the bottom line of code from photobucket to here! Even I can do it!

Remembering to resize the piks first to the 450 by 450 pixels size requirement......Cheers Kaz

team work ladies - hats off to Nerwen and Lin

Keep us updated on little Pixie - strong girl she is even though she is little :)

Latest update on Pixie!!!

Little pet doing well. Though I have discovered that he is a budding actor!!!!

Everytime I go to check him out in his little cage (all set up with light and blanket) he fluffs up and looks at me like he is about to fall off the perch. I'm freaking, thinking he is going down hill. Then when my daughter (who Pixie refers to as Chixie and thinks is his wife) visits, he woolf whistles before exclaiming ' Hello, hello, give us a kiss'!!!!

Here is one thing worth everyone noting - last night I checked on Pixie and found giant black ants in and around his cage!!! They must have sensed his weakness/wound and hunted him out, but the thing is, Pixie was inside on the upper level of a 2 story house with all the doors and windows shut!!! So ...beware ANTS!!! :P:)

Ironically, my attempts to squash ants in Pixies cage was NOT APPRECIATED by Pixie who vocally complained with the addition of a few pecks!!

Typical, the mother gets blamed for everything!!! :)

Once again, thanks to everyone for the kindness.

Photo stuff I will look at - and am sure I can work out (with some help?)

good to here

photo help...go to Budgie Pictures forums and there is alot of information there and if you have questions to to tech/support forum we will be glad to assist you

aw poor little pixie! hope he gets better soon! Can't believe the ants thats horrible!!!!!

You've got to live in Australia to understand the ants! They will hunt out food or the weak anywhere! Especially when it is warm! Those darn big ones start coming into my courtyard an hour before I feed my cats! Poor cats never know where I'm going to feed them next :P

Great news to hear he is lively - you have no idea how good a sign that is - looks like he's going to pull through. I can say now that I didn't hold out much hope for the little guy, but it shows what a wonderful life he has that he has the will to survive :):):)

Now, I'm sure we asked for pics :D

I'm glad to hear he is doing well  Smart idea to call Currumbin Bird Sanctuary They would have heap of experience with injured birds.

Latest news on Pixie:

He has the heart of Phar Lap (for those from scotland or nth america or elsewhere who do not know who Phar Lap is, replace this with the name of your favourite hero who is renowned for having a giant heart) in the body of a flea!!!! :)

First thing this morning I woke up to him singing and calling out (he is right next to my bed at moment so I cant miss it). I think - good sign!!! Go to change his seed and he slips out and runs up my sleeve (with his pirate limp) to give me a kiss. Was very indignant to be put back inside!!! Fact is, though, he is still quite weak, and is more vulnerable than he thinks! as he has a big ego!

We had a warm day today which suited him, but tonight is cool and he is fluffy and a bit wide-eyed again which I know is not ideal.

Lin, I have to say I agree with you - I did not hold much hope for the little man pulling through, especially because he is so small (half the size of my brother's budgie). Vet recons he is the smallest full grown budgie she has seen (questioned me about his age as she thought he was a teenager). To be honest, I will not be happy untill 4 or 5 days have passed.

The time of watching and waiting, has, however, been eased by sharing the journey with all of the lovely ladies from across the globe who have responded to my call for help.

Awe what a sweet heart do you have any pictures you can post of him :), in his time of need so we can smile at this brave little one even more. What a fighter.

Latest on pixie:

actually wrote a long mail but it (for some reason) did not come up on post. So here is edited version.

Pixie doing well today (chatting, calling out, wanting to come out of little cage etc), though a cold night tonight and he is again fluffed up and a bit vague.

Lin, I have to agree with you. I was not hopeful of the little man's future but each day gives me a brighter view.

Thanks to all the lovely ladies over the globe that have watched and waited alongside me!!!

Sorry !! Because first and second email from me are both now on the site.

Anyhow, it's all about Pixie (and I'm not very familiar with how this technology works) so hopefully I don't look too silly?

nah sometimes that happenes to me where it says page not displayed what I do is go back into the forums click on my post again and see if it came up :). Just glad she is doing well.

:) Love his spunkiness, what a great guy!
