Posted July 27, 200619 yr hi again, we have recently made up an aviary foor our 10 budgies and we put pavers on the floor. though whenever i go outside at least 1 budgie is on the groun picking at the droppings. i hose it out very regular though there isnt really anything i can do to stop them. could you recommend anything to put on the ground? :budgiedance:
July 27, 200619 yr I have had an avairy for 5 years three of which it has had pavers. My budgies are always on the ground pecking around. I'm no expert, but I would just say they are filling there time and being inquisitaive.
July 27, 200619 yr It doesn't matter what you have as an aviary floor....I have concrete, sand and woodchips. It is their nature to forage on the ground. They may be pecking at spilt seed, sand and grit, insects or whatever...it is part of thier nature and I wouldn't worry about it. Cheers karen
July 27, 200619 yr I would say wood shavings or sand. The pet shop where my boyfriend works has an aiviary and they put this grey soft stuff on the floor but i dont know the name of it. i'll check that for you okay! Jen
July 27, 200619 yr I use sand on top of the cement floor. Everyone so often, I take the whole lot out and replace. Use a sand that is safe for kids, and you should be right.
July 28, 200619 yr The name of the soft grey stuff i mentioned earlier is cellsorb. My friend told me all it really is, is recycled eggcarton and other biodegradable paper products. :feedbirds:
July 28, 200619 yr Sounds great for an inside bird, but outside I think it would get soft and soggy quickly. Then it would be dangerous because of mould and diseases growing in it
August 1, 200619 yr sneak down to the beach and pinch a couple of buckets of sand at a time Its gritty, full of minerals and can be replaced easily- make sure its clean though
August 1, 200619 yr Just a point. One of the top Breeders in Queensland used to have sand on the floor of his aviaries. (600 birds) and had a problem with deaths. It turned out to be the foaling of the sand. He now has a concreat floor that is hosed out every week. As Lin said you would need to replace the sand often to make sure that it doesn't become contaminated. I have a concreat floor that is cleaned and vacumed every week.
