Posted July 23, 200619 yr I was standing outside the aviary, and saw this sight! How sweet, but why is her butt up in the air? Back off! The Phoebe disease! Now, should I pop in an nest box - this is an aviary, so I can see lots of probs! Or, can I bring the pair in, will she stay on those eggs? Suggestions please!
July 23, 200619 yr But Lin, you are a REAL breeder so this should not present a problem? Oh dear, understand it is cold there now, good luck Lin!!!
July 23, 200619 yr I would move the pair into a box by themselves and put the eggs in the box, she might see them as her's still and continue sitting, or throw them out to start again, either way it sounds as if your willing to let them continue.
July 23, 200619 yr BUT I'm not breeding anymore! Darn birds, expect them in the post! They must belong to you! Nerwen, do you mean bring them inside, or just pop a box in the aviary? Yes, I am willing to let them continue, I can't bear to throw out eggs! Edited July 23, 200619 yr by Lin

Yes, I am willing to let them continue, I can't bear to throw out eggs! Lin.....if you change her laying conditions now she will abandon those eggs. What I have done that is succesful is wait till she is nearly ready to lay the next egg....then put her and him in a breeder cage or similar with a nestbox....allow her to lay that egg in the nest box. As soon as that egg is laid and she knows where she will be hatching the eggs you can put the other eggs in with her. If you put the eggs in the new nesting box first she won't recognise them as hers. But adding them to the new eggs works. Pm me if you need help. Cheers kaz PS The breeder cage works in this situation over adding a nesting box to the aviary....as she has no other choice than to use the nesting box in a breeder cage.....if you add a nesting box to the aviary she will still want to choose where she lays her eggs. If you put the box in the aviary and then put her eggs in it she will be confused as to whether or not they are her eggs and still try and lay elsewhere. In the meantime, put some wood shavings around the permieter of those eggs so they are marginally safer from damage and rolling around. If she is laying those eggs with other birds around she will be stressed about the other birds getting at ther eggs. So, my suggestion is watch and wait for imminent arrival of the next egg, or move her to a breeder cage now, keeping other eggs ready to add to her first nesting box egg. July 23, 200619 yr Glad you are getting help Lin. I am up soaking my socks in cold water, they dried within 2 hours, excepting the cuffs...................It's not my fault about the eggs, really. I don't think so anyhow, guess they are just happy campers! Good Luck! I shall help NAME them!
July 23, 200619 yr I was meaning a breeding cage to put them in. What Karen siad is a good idea too, I thought of it but wondered aobut the egg getting too cold while you waited for her to set up camp in the nest box.
July 23, 200619 yr Well, the breeding cage has finally dried out after a good clean (*note to self, don;t be lazy and clean as soon as finished*), so I will pop the pair in with the eggs and see what happens.
July 23, 200619 yr I was meaning a breeding cage to put them in. What Karen siad is a good idea too, I thought of it but wondered aobut the egg getting too cold while you waited for her to set up camp in the nest box. If the hen wasnt sitting fulltime on the eggs incubating them, she can afford to wait a day for the next eggs laid to add those eggs to the new egg. Considering they are sitting on a cold shelf in an aviary you can assume she isnt quite ready to incubate them and can afford to wait another day for next egg to be laid. Just put in a warm and safe place for a day. Chances of her accepting the eggs added to the next laid egg is higher than putting them in nest box and hoping she will know the existing eggs are hers( but just in a new place ). If she gets in a nesting box with eggs in it....she will think ..."someone elses nesting box" and either throw them out or damage the eggs getting the box the way she wants it. Also she wont take her time setting up camp with the nesting box if she is ready to lay the next. She should just get down to it, then you can add the other eggs. Its about timing and budgie psychology. Edited July 23, 200619 yr by Bubbles
July 23, 200619 yr If you have other hens sitting on eggs you could try and foster out the eggs to them, it's worth a try!!
July 23, 200619 yr If you have other hens sitting on eggs you could try and foster out the eggs to them, it's worth a try!! She hasnt
July 23, 200619 yr Well in that case all I can think of is maybe get your hands on an incubator?? But then you have to hand rear them which is very time consuming.! Let us know what you decide to do.
July 23, 200619 yr Because I work, I put them in the breeding cage with the eggs on my way to work. Asked my oldest boy to pop them in my room with seed and water - came home to find them on the coffee table, no seed, no water. Teenagers! Anyway, it was dark when I got home from work, and they were both in the nestbox part of the cage, and she is sitting on the eggs. I'll see how she is after I finish work tomorrow, but, fingers crossed they are going to be okay!
July 23, 200619 yr Great result. Your bird shows much intelligence....and hopefully it'll come out in the babies. Good luck with the eggs Phoebe....OOOPPS!! I mean Lin.........
July 23, 200619 yr Careful, everyone! This disease has spread from Canada to Australia - it's more contagious than bird flu
July 23, 200619 yr As long as we can't catch THIS one from the birds Lin....I don't want to be dropping eggs everywhere I go
July 23, 200619 yr Careful, everyone! This disease has spread from Canada to Australia - it's more contagious than bird flu I think I'm on the way from Canada to Australia - I should be watching my dear birds closely now Edited July 23, 200619 yr by Zebra
July 23, 200619 yr You guys crack me up - I get my daily dose of laughter from this site!! Good to hear she's sitting on the eggs!!
July 23, 200619 yr You think it's funny having the disease of "Unexpected, Unplanned and Unexplained Irregular Breeding Habits" associated with your name???
July 24, 200619 yr Update: She's tossed one of the eggs today, but is sitting nicely, making Daddy feed her in the nestbox entry, and he is being very attentive! So, even if I lose these eggs, I am sure I will have more laid!
