New Breeder

Hey Every one my name is Kelly and I am a new member. I am a very new breeder in fact one of my hens is brooding on our first clutch. We started with four eggs butt unfortunatley two eggs were destroyed by one of the pair. She is still sitting on the remaining two but the 1st was due to hatch on Tuesday and the second today. I have candled the eggs and just saw dark shadow on the bottom of the egg. I am hesitant to take the eggs away just in case! The birds are both aprox 18months old. It is the first attempt for all of us. Any advise out there?

Hi Kelly and welcome to the Bestest Budgie Site on the WWW! :(Laughing out loud):

Exciting isn't it breeding your birds? There is nothing quite as magical as the first time your birds lay & incubate their eggs. I can still remember my very first breeding attempt. :P He was the most gorgeous Pied you ever saw!

Don't disturb your birds too much - first time breeders can be a bit finicky. Give them daily fresh vegies & some fruit a few times a week.

I'd also suggest calcium supplement in their water as when hens lay eggs it takes alot of their calcium reserves.

I'll leave some more tips for the other members to share too. :P

Hi and welcome! All of what Karen said, and, leave the eggs in there. She will eventually toss them out herself. Sometimes it can take a while longer for the eggs to hatch, I would leave for at least 10 days! Did you start working out the hatch date from the day she started sitting, or the day she laid?

Yes I would leave the egg for longer. 18 days is just a guide to when they will hatch some can take up to 21 days. It all depends on how well the mother sits on the eggs and from when she started. Some hens will start sitting from the first egg, other wait until two or three eggs.

Read around and ask questions, we don't get mad for repeated questions, sometimes it's hard to find the right info you want with the search tool.

Don't dispair if none hatch this time, they can try again stright away if both birds are still in good health.

Hi Kelly, welcome to the boards! good luck with the eggs.

Hope you enjoy yourself here! :)

Thanks for the Info I have taken the date from when she laid as she started sitting straight away. They still have not hatched but as you said I think I will leave it to her.

In the mean time I have another two who are bonding nicely the hen is a normal mauve and the male a Cobolt blue.

Thanks for your Help.

Thanks Karen

You are right I was so exsited when I open the next box to find the first egg. I have been giving them grated carrot or silverbeet or celery each day and some apple or grapes a couple of times a week. But I have not given any calcium so I will do that. I am going to take Lin's advise and leave her with the eggs until she gets rid of them herself.

Thanks

Kelly
