Posted July 19, 200619 yr My Budgie(Joey) is not eating Fruits and Vegtables because when i give it to Joey it takes him a while to eat see what the food is.. and by the time he goes to try it is soggy and dryed up already cause it is not in the fridge. Joey eats crackers and his seeds and Spray millet but i don' t want him to get over weight by eating just his seeds. so can someone tell me a trick or an easier way for Joey to eat fruits and vegtables. IF you can give me some advice that would be GREAT!!! Thanks Mickey!!! :ausb:
July 19, 200619 yr The first thing you might do is mix up how you offer them. If you are trying to get Joey to eat carrots, clip a raw baby carrot to the cage, offer them shredded in a dish or weave them through the cage bars. Lightly steam them, or cook them and mash them up into a paste and put them on a dish. Mix the paste with a few seeds. You need to figure out a way to offer them so that initially your bird isn't afraid of them. Smallish pieces are much better in the beginning. It may take several weeks before you hit upon some way he will try them. If you offer them raw at first, they will keep longer in the cage. Cooked foods should be removed after 2 or 3 hours unless the room is warm, then remove them sooner. Raw carrots can be left out much longer. If carrots don't work, try baby spinach leaves (usually a hit) or broccoli. Broccoli needs to be cut up small at first, or your bird will probably be afraid of it. Would you want to eat something bigger than your head? A regular sized broccoli floret is bigger than Joey's head, and if he doesn't know it's food will more than likely not go near it. Good luck and perservere! You might think you are just wasting the food, but once he begins to try new foods, he will be much better off in the long run. Budgies are very finicky about changing their diets, but it can be done. :ausb: Edited July 19, 200619 yr by Rainbow
July 19, 200619 yr What I did with Pretty is cut up the veggies and added a teaspoon of seed therefore he ate the seed and started finally after like 2 months to try the greens. It takes awhile don't give up.
July 19, 200619 yr I'm having the same problem with oscar, he isn't frightned of them - he gives them a nibble then shakes his head. just ignores them after that!
July 19, 200619 yr Perserverance wins out on this one. I would start with raw carrots and perhaps some frozen corn. Cut the carrot into budgie beak size pieces (mine love it that way) and let the frozen corn thaw. I would leave it for awhile for birds have acute sense of smell. Of course they aren't sure of it at first, but keep persisting and they will try it. Mine love baby carrots cut beak size, broccoli, some fruits and potatoes and rice. You can put the carrots and corn in a separate dish or put it with their food. Another way to get them to eat the fruits and veggies is to get Beak Appetit.
