Budgie Laying Down

Please can you help me?

My budgie was perfectly fine, but yesterday I looked at her and she was laying on a perch. She looked sick, so I separated her and put her in her own cage and covered half of the cage. After a while she looked much better - she was eating and drinking (I gave her very weak camomile tea), but she was nervous on her own flying around (she could hear the other birds outside. But I don't have other place to put her. ) So after a while I decided to put her back with her friends. She looked much happier, but still laying down. She eats and flys, but when she sits, it looks like her feet hurt, because she is resting them or sometime she lays on a perch by the net and hangs on the net with her beak. I could see her biting her foot, but just for little while, not much.

I'm really worried, I will take her to my avian vet as soon as possible, but they are closed now - so I can do it on monday only.

Do you think I should take her back inside (and maybe use infrared light), even when she doesn't want to be on her own?

Does anybody has an idea what could be wrong with her?

Here are some pictures of her

:) Poor thing, you can really tell she isn't well. Is it possible she has scaley mites on her feet, that could make them sore. Too bad it isn't Monday yet so you could take her in to see the vet.

did you examine her feet for any injuries, nail tears, sores?

Her feet look okay. I caught her to look at her feet and belly and everything looks okay to me. If she didn't lay down I wouldn't even know there is something wrong with her. I thought she would be more comfortable on her own, but she kept calling the flock and flying around like mad hiting the sites of the cage. So I think it's safer to be with the rest for now. I've put some camomile tea to all their water bowls, so she drinks some. I don't know how else to help her :) . I even bought an infrared bulb, just in case.

I think your running the risk of her being bullied by the others leaving her in with all of them. Is it possible to pop her in another room, maybe with one of your 'nicer' budgies for company? Definately a vet trip, and don't forget to tell him that she has been in contact with all your other budgies - they will all need to be treated.

Poor girl. You said she was fine before...do you think there is any chance she got in a scuffle with another bird and got her toes or the base of one leg bitten? I don't know how easy it is to catch her, but I think I would get her again and give her a thorough visual going over, and check her feet and legs extra carefully. She seems to lean to the left in all of the pics you posted. I think I would seperate her just in case, keep her in the house where she will be warm, and take another bird from the aviary that she seems attached to. If she is sick I know you should keep her away from all the birds, but since they all live together anyway if she is ill the others have already been exposed. She will be happier with another bird around. A check with the vet on Monday sounds like a real good idea.

:D How's your girl doing? :ausb:

I caught her again and put her into a small cage. I tried to put other budgie in with her, but she was flying like mad and kept hiting the other budgie. So I've put the other one back into the aviary and left her on her own. I've covered her with a blanket, so now she have calmed down. I've tried to use the infrared light on her, but the bulb cracked - bad luck :ausb: .I'll take her to the vet as soon as possible tomorrow.

I caught her to look at her legs and feet yesterday and today as well, but didn't see anything. I've looked on the internet how scaly leg mites look, but I didn't see it on her feet, no cuts or blood. I'll see what the vet says.

Thank you, I hope so too. I've tried to check her tummy, but I can't feel or see anything :ausb: . I'll see tomorrow what the vet says.

I disagree about putting her back in the aviary. If you have a larger cage that you can keep covered (so she doesn't fly about) that would be better. It's not ONLY about infecting the other birds, it's about being able to keep an eye on her so that you know exactly what to tell the vety tomorrow. Is it an avian vet?

How old is she?

Yes, I'm taking her to an avian vet. I don't know how old she is (I think not more then a year, but I'm not sure). She is in a small cage for now, yesterday I've put her in a bit bigger cage, but she was flying around and hiting the sites, so I think the small one is safer for her - she is not in it forever. I'll see what the vet says and if she will have to stay separated for longer, I'll put her in bigger cage.

How is your little'girl' today? I do hope she is okay

Have you seen the Vet yet?

We've just came back from the vet.

She checked her (and her dropping) and said that my little girl have eaten too much sand  . So she's got sore tummy. Now I must give her lots of fruit and veg to help her digestion. And she got some weak antibiotics.

And she told me to remove the sand bowl. She said that sometimes young birds just eat too much of it. She actually said that budgies (or parrots) don't really need to eat sand to digest  . Thats confusing, I thought budgies need sand.

Did this happened to anyone before? :fear

I'm so glad everything has turned out okay! You must be so relieved.....

I had never heard of giving budgies sand...is that like giving budgies shell grit? Does sand do the same thing? I've heard that shell grit helps with digestion, but have also heard that because budgies crack the seeds that they eat, they don't need it. Oh the dilemmas!!!!

But I am so glad your little girl is fine....

Cheers,

Tracey

What I have heard is that grit or sand can become impacted in their crop which can lead to what you are talking about or even deadly.

It is debatable and if you go back on some posts you will see where some members are adamant about giving grit. Because budgies shell their seed it is now said that they do not need grit like those that don't shell their seeds.

I don't give mine grit because it says it is not essential to their daily living others do.

I am glad you found out what happened before it was too late and your little girl is going to be okay. Keep an eye on her as I am sure you will and keep us updated on her progress.

Sand is an alternative to grit, so, same probs can occur. And, I think you have had one of the rare budgies that do this kind of thing, that overindulges in this kind of thing. It can cause death, so, do remove the sand. If anyone is insistent on giving grit or a substitute, and, I myself do sometimes, then just give small amounts every couple of months. Remember, in the wild birds do eat some dirt, so, it is my belief that it is helpful. But, small amounts, and not often at all! (Eggshell does the same job in a bird, so follow this rule for that too)

I've got shell grit and "Australian sand" - red with eucalyptus oil in it. I thought it would be good for them, but now I removed it from all my birds. I don't want to risk their health.

She is a bit nervous on her own, but it's not for long. She got antibiotics for a week, so I'll see if she is okay then.

Thank you for your advise and help  I feel much better now - I was so worried I couldn't sleep.

I'm so pleased it has all worked out, if you had left it much longer it could have been sad news all round. Good on you for being a good, concerned and loving budgie Mummy :angel1:

Thanks Lin, I'm very happy I know what's wrong with her. And I'm very happy I don't have to cure all my birds

So glad that all worked out for your little girl. You have beautiful budgies.

 What a relief! Glad she is now on the road to recovery!

thats great news. i'm glad she is going to be okay.

My little girl Timi looks much better now, still laying down sometimes, but looks happy. She eats and drinks her water with antibiotics :)

I hope she will be healthy again
