Posted July 15, 200618 yr I bought 2 budgies from the local bird shop and now 3month later there 2nd lot of babies have just emerged from the nest, now I have 8 birds,so i decided to build a new avairy. It is 10ftx7ftx7ft and my mum has just given me a fibreglass pond with a fountain, looks great in the cage with a few plants around it,but is there anything I need to look out for that might endanger my birds?(sorry no pictures as yet,new to this sight)
July 15, 200618 yr Young budgies can drown in water generally that isnt all that deep....They fly into it and once waterlogged dont always know how to get out. Read this topic by another forum member http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....l=pearl+drowned You will have to put mesh or something over the top of your water fountain probably. Have a think about it and try and foresee any dangers.
July 15, 200618 yr ponds should be find if you take a couple of simple precautions don't have the water to deep and make the edges slope very gradually with sand so if they get water logged they can get out easily
July 15, 200618 yr Have a few rocks strategically placed so they can climb up and sit and dry. They should learn pretty quickly how to deal with the pond, but it will be dangerous for a while
July 15, 200618 yr I put a pond in my aviary made out of an old bath tub.. To make sure the budgies didn't drown or anything in the water i made a wire mesh cover that sat inside the tub and its supported with polished pebbles that i've stuck to the inside edge of the tub. I cut only small holes big enough for the reeds or the fountain to stick out from so that birds in no way could get under the mesh.. Cheers  Una
