Posted July 13, 200618 yr hello i have been given 2 cockatiels from my cousin and he is bringing them up tonight in there big cage, will my budgie joey be okay with them or will it take some time for him to get used to them?
July 13, 200618 yr Cockatiels are a lot more placid and laid back than budgies - you will probably find that your budgie will harrass the tiels However, when a tiel does decide to retaliate, they can cause some damage (you should see my fingers ). Introduce them carefully, and always supervise flight time. Don't cage together - no matter how well they get on (and they should get on well) one day something will happen. Don't forget quarantine too! And pics - I'm a bit of a tiel fan
July 13, 200618 yr okay whats a tiel......never had a cockatiel before (Laughing out loud) they are 20 years old so no youngsters also
July 13, 200618 yr Oh, so they are elderly - 20 years is about the norm, some live to 30. Tiels are just a shortened way of saying cockatiels I love tiels, you will really enjoy them - I have now got 4 inside and 5 in my aviary They love to chew - give them lots of raffia, pieces of wood (craft popsticks, craft matchsticks) etc, that way they MIGHT leave your electrical cords alone
July 13, 200618 yr i was told they like to fly up onto a door and sit there all day, which could be funny as we just had the house decorated
July 13, 200618 yr congrats Are they tamed at all? What are their genders? I believe Joey will enjoy their company but take Lin's advice it is excellent.
July 13, 200618 yr There certainly not as active as budgies, and, if tame, absolutely love to be with people. I have the cleanest eyelashes around, thanks to mine Just do keep an eye on them - they will chew anything! Always chewing! I have just had to buy a cordless mouse, as mine ate my mouse cord
July 13, 200618 yr Another name for cockatiels is weiros in Australia..........Lin did you say YES to 14 more ??
July 13, 200618 yr Another name for cockatiels is weiros in Australia..........Lin did you say YES to 14 more ?? Certainly did Kazza - told you I was a tiel fan
July 13, 200618 yr hmmmm weiros huh seriously Lovey...we commonly call them weiros.....like the word weirdo without the D HHHMMMMM wonder if thats to do with thier "hair-do" ???? Edited July 13, 200618 yr by Bubbles
July 13, 200618 yr I think we in the West are the only ones that call them that. No idea why though. My very first weero was called Weerdo - very inventive, hey?
July 13, 200618 yr How funny, man I love tiels, I had 2 when I was younger. I want another I am going to wait till the kids are in school full-time and I have to by another cage. I have 1 but it is a round one and I don't want to use it for permanent now that I have learned it is not a good one. I would probably purchase another one like I have. There is a pied that they rescued right in my area, wild and all I want it (Laughing out loud) the challange but I closed the pet finders window and sighed. Tim would kill me (okay not literally) we have the space but the time is our issue and I don't want to cheat the tiel. Anyways that is totally OFF TOPIC  You will have to post pictures of your 2 new tiels aka weeros
July 13, 200618 yr okay so I spelt it wrong maybe .....but google finds it both spellings "History The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) is the smallest member of the cockatoo family. It is also known as the Quarrion or the Weero. It was first recorded in 1781 during Captain Cook's voyage to Australia. Dr John Latham, one of Cook's officers, described it as a 'Crested Parakeet'. This Australian native bird is generally recognised as a nomadic (wandering) species, which can still be found in the wild in most parts of Australia (particularly in inland regions). The French are said to have started breeding Cockatiels in captivity sometime prior to 1850."
July 14, 200618 yr No cockatiels and budgies together, no budgies and lovebirds together, no cockatiels and lovebirds together and on and on. I mean it does work sometimes as I know somebody who had a cockatiel and finch in the same cage and they got along very well but that is the exception rather than the rule, especially with senior birds set in their ways, not worth the risk at all. I mean, I can't even let my different species all out for exercise at the same time so I would certainly not cage them together.
