Posted July 12, 200618 yr Hi People, Here in Perth WA we are having some pretty cold weather. So far I have lost 6 babies at about the 2-3 day old mark. It is happening in each of the nest boxes which are all in breeding cabnets in my shed. What do you think? Could it be the cold. They have all the comforts of home, the right seed, soaked oats, egg biscuits, everything has been done as I have done before. This is the first time I've bred in winter, I don't know whats up but it is sad. Paul :budgiedance:
July 12, 200618 yr It could be the cold....I lost 12 babies when we had that really cold snap a while back too. Also, if you have any french moult go through the aviaries it can cause early deaths in other babies apparently. So far no losses this time. One little mite was found away from the mother and near to death this morning, I put it back to Mum and she has warmed it and brought it back....well I hope to see it fed and warm tomorrow. Some Mums arent as good at keeping all babies warm through the cold weather. Some Mums cant see the tiny ones if the nesting material is too thick too. Good luck with your babies..........PM me if you need further help. Edited July 12, 200618 yr by Bubbles
July 12, 200618 yr Knowing how cold our nights have been, I would say it is the cold. I have heard over the years of a lot of chicks of different breeds dying due to cold on our odd cold night. Next year leave it a bit later to breed, shouldn't have any probs then.
