Twitching Wings And Always Preening

hello joey my budgie has never like moved his wings as much as he has been past coupld days. he is sitting on his perch like moving his wings while they are still like not in fly mode. and he has been preening like non stop also.

i was thinking maybe he had mite or flees or something of that nature so can anyone give me advice?

yis it very hot in your area? it kinda sounds like he is holding his wings out to get cool.

no its very cool here, windows open, he has been in WAY hotter. its a bad day here in scotland

Is he flapping his wings very fast, mine do that when they don't get out for free time more then usual and at night. Exercising his wings.

As for preening has he started molting?

Sounds like exercising wings to me, my birds do this quite often if they are cagebound for too long :budgiedance:

well joey never comes out cage, he is scared and if i take him out he will just fly back to cage. he wont even go on my fingure!

does he do this when you talk to him because if he does it is a sign of being nervous and the preening I think is a molt or maybe you just noticed how much they really preen because really they do it like every 10 mins (Laughing out loud), not a complete preen but here and there ya know.

Is it like a quick flick of the wings? Budgies will do that when they have excess energy or are nervous. Have there been any changes lately, either in the household or the room where he is kept? If the excess preening also involves the flight feathers he may have a wing feather slightly out of place that is irritating him. He will then preen and flick, preen and flick, until the feather is fixed. If one is bent or broken he may eventually pull it out.

its as if he is trying to fly but without expanding his wings and very twichy and nervouse movement. he has been ill lately due to stress with moving and redecorating.

sounds like you found out the issue with everything being changed around he is very nervous. Maybe keeping his cage covered on all 3 sides for a few days to calm him back down will help.

I noticed you have a plastic budgie in his cage is he very attached to it? You said he isn't very tame and bites when you put your hand in the cage. Mirrors and plastic budgies or anything they can see another budgie are recommended not to be used or only out of the cage for rewards because they can get too attached to the object and become defensive and protective of it which can cause them to act the way he is.

It is personal opinion but I never used a mirror because of this reason I wanted Pretty to bond with me and not be frightful. You may want to remove it or rearrange his cage AFTER he settles back down. If you want to bond with him and tame him down. Many people do it and see a big difference.

I am sorry but I have to disagree with not giving a lone budgie mirrors and plastic budgies in their cages. To me it is totally wrong. My wonderful budgie Percy (has chronic liver disease etc etc) has ALWAYS had mirrors in his cage and has one of those budgies with a weight at the bottom that swings on the perch.. he LOVES his mirrors and the budgie and I would never deprive him of either. In fact he has two mirrors in his cage and several outside.... he is a brilliant talker, he is finger tame (tho doesn't like to be held in your hands as he associates this with dosing of medicine!!) but he has been fine with all the accoutrements since we had him.

I really think that it's cruel not to give them some company apart from human. I don't like the fact that we don't have two budgies but we couldn't at the time and now after 4 yrs and all his ill health problems I couldn't get another one. But please DO give them mirrors and plastic budgies as it doesn't impede their character at all. And whilst on the subject of do's and don'ts.... PLEASE don't clip their wings as that is the cruellest of all. They are meant to fly, Percy is out all day and comes and goes in his cage as he wants, all you have to do is keep the door of the room closed and be careful when you go in. Luckily he stays in or on his cage... but to clip their wings is total cruelty... how would we humans like our feet cut so we couldn't walk????

By they way, Percy also twitches his wings and preens them a lot... not sure what that is either so hope someone can come up with the answer to the original question. Thanks guys.

I think that is why it is called personal opinion so many topics are up for discussion and what works for one may not work for another -_-. So I usually don't tell people to do it or not to do it just recommend it and they can chose from there. There are pros and cons to everything in life.
