Posted July 12, 200618 yr What do i do??? Look like babies crops are not emptying Lost one baby 8 days old this morning, his crop was very full extending into wing area (It looked like that), also the crop was fulll of seed and almost transparent. the stomach was bloated (3 1/2 inches/9 cm in circumference) looked like it was full of water or gas, felt very solid, the poor little fellow was stilll very warm when I found him and his face was blue. Well her 2nd baby is starting to look the same way, also one of Rainbows baby is similar. The Seed has not been changed and they still get their same greens, so what can I do. Phoned Avain Vet. She said to take it to her as she has not heard of it before!!! As the 2 babies are both only 5 days old, is it safe to take them on a 30 - 45 minute drive, away from Mum in cold weather. I have never had this problem with my birds before They look so uncomfortable and I want to help them, so please can someone advise me Cindy Edited July 13, 200618 yr by Cindy
July 12, 200618 yr if the vet wants to see them that's the best person to take them too. I would take mum and chicks possibly locking mum in the box with them not sure about that, or using a hotwater bottle wrapped in a towel to keep them warm (or even a samp towel heated up would work too wraped in another dry one) I'm looking in my book to see if there is some info to help. Big question was/is there any buising of the skin in the chicks? The bit aobut the abdomen triggered me to something I had read. Polymavirus, has enlarged abdomen and slowly emptying of crops and death. Plus the brusing I asked about. Edited July 12, 200618 yr by Nerwen
July 12, 200618 yr I would pop the whole nest box, Mum and all in a small cage and take them to the vet. Never heard of this happening with a parent fed bird, so I would definately get it checked out

Just checked the others and there is no bruising there either. Will take them to Vet and let you know Cindy
July 12, 200618 yr I'm glad to hear it then, I wonder if the one the died didn't choke on food from over feeding.
July 12, 200618 yr Author That may be it in a nutshell, he was always eating. I checked the others about 20 mins ago, they look okay, but then it was by torchlight. I will check again tomorrow morning and if they are still the same I'll contact the Vet again. Cindy
July 13, 200618 yr Author Well the Vet was not much help in the end. Each time I phoned to see when I could take them in ,she was out, and not on Vet visits, Bank, chemist, butcher - did not even return my calls to say come in. Finally my Neighbour, who's sons breed show budgies (pays over A$1000.00 for some) .came and said the same as Nerwen, he over-ate himself to death. Said as he was first bornn Dad gave him most of the food and the baby did not stop taking it and over filled his crop ?. Stomach was full of gas because food was not going down. The other babies are super healthy this morning, normal size for their ages and tweeting away when I picked them all up to check on them. Now I just have to find a better Vet. Cindy
July 13, 200618 yr glad you were able to get some advise, breeders know heaps of info and if he is that big into it ( anyone paying htat much is) he would have heaps of knowledge when it comes to breeding.
July 13, 200618 yr I'm sorry about the loss of the baby, but I'm glad you have some idea of what might have happened. Hopefully you don't have any more baby losses.

I almost fell over when his Dad said he paid $1000. I jokingly asked if he bought the whole aviary and was the bird gold-plated:D . I must find out where he lives (the son, not the Dad) and where he shows his birds and let you know. I took their seed away for a couple of hours last night and early today. and the babies have settled down and look healthy. (I'm a bit paranoid now and keep checking every hour) Thanks for your input Cindy
