Posted July 10, 200619 yr I have a single male budgie that's about one and a half years old now. Frequently I've seen him head bob and regurgitate food to his toys, however I'm starting to find little sticky balls of seed in a milky substance in really odd places around his cage. Usually I find it on his favourite toys, 'cause that's where he places it, but now I'm finding it on the cage bars where he never lands, underneath perches, beside his water dish etc. Basically just really odd places where he doesn't frequent. So I'm wondering how on earth it gets there? Does have to place it there? Or can he toss regurgitated seed around normally? If so, then could he be vomitting instead? I know I'm probably just paranoid, but there definately is an increase in the amount of seed stuck everywhere. Anyway, as a side note, Phoenix said something funny today. He said to me, "I'm a mean, green fighting machine", where I replied, "I know you are, but what am I?" He paused for a little while and looked at me, before finally saying "A pudgie budgie!"
July 10, 200619 yr it is very normal for a budgie to go through this stage here are some things you can do to lessen it or stop it if you like. 1. Lessen the daylight hours so cover him sooner and keep him covered longer in the morning 2. Arrange his cage around 1x a week or at least 1 every other week 3. Add different toys every other week or once a month and remove old ones especially the ones you find he is getting attached too. 4. remove mirrors as they spark this behavior because they see another budgie too feed, and any other reflective toys like bells or shiny parts. Give mirrors as treats outside of the cage and bells etc..you can reintroduce but change them often I am sure there will be more tips but that is what I can think of right now :fear.
July 10, 200619 yr I'd keep an eye on him. Regurgitation is a very controlled behavior, and the food will only go where he places it. They don't even have to bring it all the way up, or will sometimes chew on it before depositing it on the object of their affection, and will sometimes re-eat it (I know, ewwww) . The head bobbing is an up and down motion. When a bird vomits, what comes up is not controlled at all, and will be flung everywhere as the bird shakes his head to get rid of it. It is usually a quick motion, and the bird moves his head from side to side and not up and down as in regurgitation. If what you are finding is encased in a slightly opaque milky substance, it sounds like vomit to me. If you start to see sticky feathers around the face or head he almost certainly has been vomiting. I remember reading somewhere that birds usually vomit due to a bacterial infection or bad food sitting in the proventriculus (stomach) and not something in the crop, but I don't know where I read it so I can't give you a link to read.
