This Is Worrying!

we've had a few storms over the last few days (one last night and another this moring) with thunder and lightning flashes. Billy seemed fine until last night when we tried to put her blanket on the cage (we cover her over every night to make her more comfortable). she started flapping clumbsily and going onto the floor of the cage. she has done this twice this morning and i am very worried.

she is also VERY nervous. i couldn't even go near her this morning. now i can go upto the cage, but she still gets very nervous if i move my hands quickly. could it be because of the strom. she has witnessed thunderstorms before (and to be honest they weren't very big) so i am a bit worried that she may be loosing her hearing or sight, or had a stroke. we aren't sure of her age, but she is at least 3 years old, maybe 4. she also seems to be sitting in a strange way.

here is a picture of her now

as i write this she seems to be struggling to stand on the perch (or the cuttlefish bone in this case). heres a video

please help

I think you need to race off to an avian vet. The most likely thing that has happened (and I can't view the video, it won't connect for me) is that the bird got startled, and flew into the side of the cage, suffering concussion. A stroke is likely, but I think an injury is more likely. Please rush to an AVIAN vet, not a normal vet, and let us know the outcome

im sorry to hear about your little one. i agree with lin i think you should take him straight to an avian vet. please let us know how you get on.

:P Agree with Lin, that is definitely not normal behaviour. ;)

Billy is okay. well, i couldn't get to our nearest avian vet (around 20 miles away) but i don't think she would have made it anyway (busy motorway). but she seemed to be back to normal last night. the mad flapping stopped and she was much chirpier. i'm going to see how this goes, but i can always phone them if anything happens.

thanks for all help

matt

and billy > :)

make sure you don't have any rust on your cage or anywhere she can get it, along with any zinc metal parts that she can chew on, metal poisoning can cause seizures and possibly what just happened. just a sidenote, glad she is better.

I did notice some rust (I think) on the bell on the mirror. You might want to consider removing the bell, just to be on the safe side. I'm pleased she seems better.

she seems much better now. she had a few problems earlier this afternoon, but she is doing okay now. i have removed the bell from the cage, because she does like to chew it, so there is no chance of any more zinc poisoning (could have been the problem, sounds about right). i might think about getting her a new cage soon. good idea?

thanks again for all the kind words

matt

if the cage doesn't have rust then it should be okay :D

Although I'm sure she'd appreciate an upgrade if you're offering. :D

I'm glad to hear she is feeling better! Would love to see pics of the new cage if/when you get it! :)
