Me Again

Hi all

I"m back again with yet more budgies.

I was looking on a site similar to ebay called Trademe and there was a handtame budgie for $85 in a big as cage and i just couldnt help myself. I managed to get them down from $100 as i really wanted a handtame budgie after my other two decided they like me when i'm looking at them from a distance and thats it

So anyway i pick up my newest little man tomorrow. Unfortunate for him his name is "chief" by no means my first choice, but changing the name of a handtame 6 month old male budgie might be a bad idea right?

Anyway i wanted to add a picture so you could tell me what type he is... i've onyl got he one picture so far, so will add more tomorrow hopefully but was wondering.... is there more to his wings that just a plain sky blue? Any guesses are good, thanks.

I've decided i think he should be okay around my other birds. They say hes been around other birds and has always been handtame and the king of the nest so i think i'll put the other two away while i introduce him for a few hours, then bring them in later on.

okay well thats enough from me... i'll jsut add this picture and look forward to hearing from you guys. Would be nice to think this lil guy has a lil streak of fancy in him, what with already having a sky blue and an olive opaline.

Bye for now

Can i ask what makes you say hes a spangle? What are the characteristics of a spangle? Cause i asked my mum ( not saying shes a pro but she bred for a long time back in the day in UK) and she said quite possibly a greywing sky blue with a touch of cinnamon on the tip of his wings, but we'll see more tomorrow.

As for the cere, yea i had wondered for about half a second too but they called him a boy him so i didnt question it.... are there particular types of birds other than lutinos and albinos ( i might be wrong) that have ceres of different colours to normal?

Possibly a greywing but hard to tell by the small photo....I was just going from what seems to be darker edges to his wing feathers which says to me spangle. I see the cinnamon colour on the flight feathers. Better and clearer photo and other people who are more expert than me on colours and you will have your answers. Good luck with all. It's exciting.

congrats

It will be okay to change his names most birds don't know their names (some do though), but when I wanted to change Pretty's everyone like go ahead and he had it for over 8 months his name.

I say cobalt spangle from the picture. People say this because of the coloration of his body and wings. Mutation doesn't change a personality. The spangles tend to look like someone traced the outer edges of their wings. Unless you get a closer pictures and it is deceiving in the picture you posted. :).

okay so i've made the picutre larger. I wont be picking him up for another hour or 2 yet but once i do i'll get some more pics.

He cere is vaguely blue in this picture... is that all it needs to be a boy? or is it the fact he is only 6 months old? Will it get darker?

So when you say spangle, so you mean the outer line on the wing is thinner than normal? but still black? and Greywings are are normal width but jsut lighter? Would that be right? and if he does have cinnamon on his wing, does that come into the name anywhere or is it just a muck up ;) hehe

Thanks.... i SOOO cant wait! just going to tidy my lounge up so he doesnt hurt himself... too fast :S

Hi Hellybell it looks like you have a skyblue spangle girl. I have bred Spangles.

Spangle on the Right is a parblue Golden Face Spangle

A normal budgerigar wing feather is black with a colour edging it. This goes for Opalines as well.

A spngle is in reverse. The colour is in the centre with a black edging. If the edging is poor or dull we usually call it a week spangle in the show world.

I love spangles. It looks like a female cobalt spangle on my monitor. Lucky you. Can't wait to see more pictures.

What a cutie! I can't wait for you to take more pictures!!!

I am going with female because it is light blue with definite white nasel rings around the nostril, and it will turn dark brown when she is in breeding condition and then go back to light blue out of breeding condition.

Spangle is when the black as Daz said is on outer part of the wing vs it being white and then black it is black and then white. Hope that makes sense. I still say cobalt according to your picture because it is a darker blue then sky according to my monitor.

Good luck and congrat again.

okay well "she" arrived 2 hours ago.

I am fairly certain shes a she as her cere is sorta cream with a tinge of green but its certainly not pink or blue and having talked to mum she says girl is far more likely.

okay... what is the definition of lacewing? because my mum looked and said she looked like a lacewing but has never heard of a spangle ( she bred ALONG time ago).

Also the colour in that first picture isnt her true colour. These next two are slightly more accurate but all the same its not quite right, i honestly dont thin shes a sky blue tho, as Pepsi is sky blue and they are QUITE different.

She also has blood where her pin feathers are too... a case of over clipping do you think?

Shes doing well so far, a little skittish but tonight i'll get her out and feed her millet and hope she warms up a bit, was much better at previous owners house, dont blame her tho.

Also i was quite shocked... she was gnawing at the rungs on her ladder getting the grit off them and i thought it was a little odd until i realised they had the grill in the bottom of the cage but it meant she couldnt get to her grit :) Poor wee thing, so shes been gnawing it off the ladder.

I've now taken the grill out as i dont like them anyway ( none of my birds have them anymore) and put extra grit in the bottom and hand fed her a little so she knew what it was but hopefully she'll do even better now, as it cant be at all healthy for her.

Anyway looking forward to hearing from you with the newer pics and i'll let you all know how she goes tonight *exciting*

I jsut remembered.. on the way over here she almost looked like she had some mauve coming thru just under the white by her neck.. is that possible or am i dreaming? (Laughing out loud)

shes 5 months old By The Way and came from a nest of mauve and green babies, didnt find out about the parents as it was from a breeder and she only saw the siblings.

:) She is absolutely stunning, enjoy your new budgie. Any names in mind yet? :D I LOVE suggesting names and so does Kirby. Chief does not somehow seem right.

She is gorgeous she is a Cobalt Spangle (or maybe even a Violet) she is a very deep blue. Did you take it with flash or without flash the pictures it makes a difference. Blue is so hard to capture, I know Merlin my blue comes out very blue when he is more like a blue jean blue he is considered a violet. Here is what you have http://www.geocities.com/budgie-place/p_colors.html#spangle

A lacewing is this http://www.geocities.com/budgie-place/p_colors.html#lacewing

Congrats!!! Yes if you need name suggestions let us know..Lacey is a pretty name because her of her wings though :)

Hahhaa i reckon... i'd jsut come back to amend that!

I am considering Lacey but i'm always open to ideas... if it helps i dont really like human names... ( okay i know some ppl are called lacey but its not sarah or anna ya know? :)) just something to guide you in your thoughts anyway.

Hmm i had said to someone if i got a girl i'd call her Talullah... hmmm.... worth thinking about

anyway i'm totally open for ideas... so suggest away :P

lovey - she isnt that deep a colour... most of that is shadow i think.. if you look at her tail in the second picture of the 2, that is more her colour but a bit lighter. This photo thing really is quite deceiving aye...and yes they were with flashes.

So when would i know if she was a violet or a blue? will it change? or can she be a bit of both (Laughing out loud)?

lovey... had i alrady suggested Lacey or were we jsut on the same wavelength? :D

:) Here I go, I find it to be an excellent stress reliever, brain storming that is. Aubrey, Mystic, Poetry, Music, Leaflet, Francine, Lamb, Cuddles, Nancee, Charlotte, Carolina, Bluelove, Jessie, Sally, Suzy, Serendipity, Orchid, Ocean,Faith, Summer, Cecily, Turqouise, Bamboo (nah, that's for a green budgie), Waterfall, Audrey, Seashell, Siren, Bluebell, Christabelle, Tiffany, Lake, Lark, Bella, Beula, Andra, Lanie, Flower and that is it for me.......... :D

Hey i was wondering... if she is tame, would it still be a bad thing to bring her in to the same room with my boys?

She might need a lttle time jsut with me aye? dont wanna send her backwards right? Am i answering my own question (Laughing out loud)... anyway input would be good thanks.

Just reporting back.... as we speak she is on my head tickling me like crazy :D

So proud! she is doing so well and i can just tell she is going to love being here. So much attention :)

By The Way.. do budgies loose their friendliness when they breed? I mean i realise shes quite a way off that but... will she be less friendly after?

She needs to be quarantined from the boys for 30 days to ensure that no one gets sick, some people don't follow it and nothing happens others have lost a whole flock. Saying that keep her in her own cage in her own room, I know it is hard it was with Merlin and Pretty but it is the best.

Blue is blue but violet would be a different shade of blue like sky blue, cobalt, mauve etc... I am going to say she is a violet she is one gorgeous lady. You can post her pictures without a flash in the mutations and see what others say.

as for breeding, I would say they could loose their tameness it is up to each bird. they won't be as tame as they were because they are busy with their mate which they will prefer over you. Good question to ask in the breeders chat as I don't breed.

I like Talullah

when I pick names I try to pck them with meaning of the color of the bird, personality etc... she looks like a Talullah :)

I think she is a sky violet (often mistaken for a cobalt budgie) and having come from a clutch with violets in it ( quote " came from a nest of mauve and green babies " ) There is violet happening in there somewhere. My Daddy budgie Clyde is a sky violet and is often mistaken for a cobalt budgie but he has violet babies all the time. I am saying "sky violet spangle" as I said spangle right in the beginning. :) A pretty budgie when all said and done.

Yea i think sky violet spangle sounds perfect.

By The Way just to let you know i've decided to call her Talullah. Suits her so well i reckon and i totally agree with who ever said " name them for their personality" i did that with my kids as well and it took nearly a week to name my last one :D hehe

Anyway shes doing good, bites a lil every now and againbut only nibbling. She does kinda snap at your tho even tho the actual bite is gentle, is this normal or is she trying to be agreesive but jsut no good at it? hehe

my daughter was putting ehr finger in the cage to let Talullah lick her and would find it tickles and pull away and i've had to stop her doing it now because evvery time she did it Talullah would bite real hard after like she thought she was in charge.

It doesnt last long tho as i let her bite all she likes and i dont care so she gets bored and does something else.

By The Way can i just ask? ca you put grit in with their food? cause she was never able to get to her grit in the bottom cause of the grill ( i cant remember ifi said or not) and she doesnt seem to know what its for now even tho i've put extra grit down jsut to trya nd tempt her. I've also put it in a lil pot on a shelf for her in her cage with some millet on as well to try and tempt her but i just dont want her going without :S

any advice more than appreciated.

man i babble dont i :ausb: hehe thanks ppl

There opens a new topic for discussion....the great grit debate. Most schools of thought are that budgies do not need grit as they husk thier seeds and grit is meant for birds that eat their seed whole.

To quote a vets opinion........" In the wild, budgies need some kind of grit to help them digest all the foods they eat, but domestic budgies are generally fed foods that are easily digestible like seeds, pellets, fresh fruits and vegetables. This diet makes the need for grit obsolete. However, it usually isn't harmful for a pet budgie to be offered grit every once in awhile, although be sure to not leave it in the cage. Budgies have been known on occasion to over-indulge in grit which can lead to fatal digestive problems in extreme cases"

so research it and make your own decision. I do not feed my budgies grit and I have 150 budgies. If they need anything like that they can get it from the soil, I am thinking. Your choice.

:)

Hmm interested post. I have to say firstly, that obviously my budgies dont get soil so thats not an option.

All my birds get grit off the bottom of their cage with their budgie lawn which i'm very happy with.

The only reason i put extra in her cage was because she was tearing her ladder to shreds to get the grit off and she was looking desperate and had never bene on the bottom of her cage as it used to have a grill on which i've now taken off.

This morning however she found the floor :) and brought a mouthful of grit up to her feeding tray and ate it so i'm now more than happy to take the grit tray out of her cage and let her do her own thing

Good to know that its not an essential tho, would like to think they have everything they need available tho. So heres hoping the grit on the floor is sufficient enough to do its job and she wont over indulge :D

Thanks for the input tho. As always this site is a brilliant source or information.
