Posted September 10, 200420 yr Hello All Iam new to this forum and i want to see if anyone can help me out i bought some budgie about 1 year ago almost and well one of them started to lay eggs and i knew i had one female to begin with cause her cere was dark brown but the other 2 only have white cere's. Anyways more to the point my female laid 2 eggs on the bottom of the cage so i bought a nestbox and i put the 2 eggs into the nest box but the Blue budgie i am assuming is the male threw them out of the nestbox and now there are 7 eggs and the blue one ( male i am assumeing ) is the only one who sits on them and the green one ( the female ) only goes into the nestbox to lay eggs. now she has laid 9 eggs and i don't know what to do if she keeps on laying more. I don't want her to get sick from not having enough calcium. i have 3 cuttle bones and an iodine block and there is lots of food and water. Any suggestions ? . And can i be assured 100% that the blue one even thought it has a white cere is actually male or just a hen that wants to sit on another hens eggs ? Just cause from what i have been reading on alot of websites is that the hen does all of the incubating and raising of the chicks and the male takes care of them after they are weaned. I have had budgies before but none of them have ever started to breed before.
September 10, 200420 yr the blue one will be a hen out of breeding condition are you sure she is not laying the eggs as they will evan though they are out of condition or they could both be laying eggs it is rare but every now and again 2 hens will share a box
September 10, 200420 yr well i was checking the eggs to see if they are fetrile cause i use to have cockatiels and the way i could tell with them is the egg would be a darker colour and non fertile would be clear. And some of the eggs look to be getting darker So i am assuming they are fertile. I was asking questions to my local pet store and they said sometimes males do not get a blue cere. I am still having trouble with that cause it does not sound right. But i am going to keep and eye out cause now both the blue and the green are laying on the eggs together. But if i do have 2 hens then i guess i could always get a male and hopefully then i well get to see some baby budgies
September 10, 200420 yr I agree with hath. Usually a white cere denotes either a hen out of breeding condition or an immature hen. Some types of males do not get a blue cere, but it usually is pink instead of white. I would just let them lay. They may sit on the eggs, but they will lose interest in them after awhile when they don't hatch.
September 11, 200420 yr well I read in a book that sometime the male will help with the incubating if the hen allows it. But that doesn't help with the cere colour. Have you got any picture you can put up? That may help.
September 11, 200420 yr No i don't have any pics of them i am going to be getting a digital Camra soon though. Oh ya there is not another egg so there are 7 now . I am also wondering if i just have 2 females but they seem to be bonded or do females do that as well. I also see them feeding eachother all of the time. I am going to let them lay but when should i put a stop to it if the egg laying does not stop ? I added another cutlebone just for extra calcium that is the main thing i am worried about. Budgies are much different when it comes to laying eggs then Cockatiels are . And the cere on the blue one is like of a little pink but very very faint.
September 11, 200420 yr Two females or two males will bond together if they are the only two around, or are caged together. Some of mine feed each other without regard to what sex they are. But if your blue bird still has a pink cere, I'm not sure whether you have the same sex or not. Is it a normal blue bird (with white or yellow face) or some other type? I only ask because I don't think I've ever seen a normal blue male without a blue cere. I've discovered that budgies are determinate layers, meaning the hen will lay a predetermined number of eggs per clutch and then will stop, so you shouldn't have a problem with continual laying like you do with cockatiels if you remove their eggs while they (cockatiels) are laying. Just leave the eggs in the box for now. Edited September 11, 200420 yr by Rainbow
September 11, 200420 yr the blue one is a normal Blue with a white face Just like this one :bluebudgie: . And the green one is a normal green with a yellow face.
September 11, 200420 yr it was white when i first got it but i am having trouble telling the sex cause it is not white or brow or blue just a light pinkish colour i have another budgies that is a harliquin and it is yellow and it also has a pinkish cere . Another thing that is bothering me right now is it looks like the green one has an egg that is half way stuck her vent is really really big and it is about the size of an egg and very pink. I am hoping that she is not egg bound or anything like that .
September 11, 200420 yr Is she sitting on the bottom of the cage and not moving about? They are signs of egg binding. Also waved her tail is another sign, if she still has sstrengh she will try and pass it.
September 11, 200420 yr the only time i have not seena normal blue without a blue cere was when it was brown and this changed from blue as it had mormone problems, and i have never heard or seen a **** incubate the eggs some times they sit in the box with the han but never to incubate them
September 11, 200420 yr no she is not on the bottom of the cage or anything she is moving about but it looks like something is still stuck. As for the blue bugie i guess i can only wait and see if any of the eggs hatch cause then i well know for sure i have a male budgie. Another thing that i am wondering i did have 4 budgies but one took a turn for the worst and is not longer and i know it was male could it be that he was paired up with the green one and she is laying the eggs and that the blue one could be a hen incubating the green ones eggs i know is sounds stupid but could it have happened.
