Big Changes About To Happen In The Aviaries

There are some big changes about to happen in my aviaires. We have a "his and hers" avairies set up. Kens aviary on the left and mine on the right. Ken has scarlets, bourkes, canaries, and finches in his. I have many budgies in mine. My avairy is 10 metres or 33 feet long by 10-12ft wide by about 8 ft high. Kens is similar dimensions but his goes at right angles....i.e. L-Shaped.

Mine on the right and his on the left. aviary12-a.jpgaviary12.jpg

As I have lost about 5 birds to fast flying accidents I have a need to divide up my aviary a bit so it cuts down on the rate of speed the birds can fly. So we have come up with a plan. We will swap aviaries. Ken needs an aviary with more shelter for his birds ....scarlets hate draughts and my aviary is better for that. His avairy is better able to be divided up for my budgies. I plan on four enclosures within the aviary. I have drawn up the plans for the changes, had some valuable input from people too, and yesterday managed to get the wire for it from a trading newspaper for a fraction of the real cost. I may start in stages soon, but we might have to wait till Ken has his holidays in 4 weeks. It's exciting. I can start dividing up some of Kens aviary now, moving his birds over as I go. Then I can move all mine that arent breeding. Eventually its just a case of open the door between both aviairies and let his birds through, as mine would have already been moved into the new section too. The divided sections I will end up with will mean ....(A) an area for breeding birds, ( an area for babies, © an area for juvenile birds, and (D) an area for non breeders and retirement birds. PM me if you want to see the plans and input will be gratefully received. :)

I can't wait to see the finished results :), it sounds like an excellent plan

Sounds like a great idea Karen. Like Lovey said, I can't wait to see the finished product. Your budgies are lucky you care so much about them.

I am excited about it. It means every kind of budgie will have an area thats theirs, and no more fast flying accidents. Might make a bit of a maze of the aviary but still heaps of space for all. Nerwen has helped with suggestions too, and since she will be visiitng here soon, she can see first hand what to do with OUR ideas. Hope she brings a hammer and nails :)

 indeed it is very exciting!! it'll definitely stop all the speeding tickets these little guys will get from going at high speed!!
 Simply beautiful place you and Ken have! :(

:) Simply beautiful place you and Ken have! :D

Thankyou :D We love it....its our little paradise

What a lovely garden you have and the aviaries at the end just finish it off. I am so envious. I used to have a big garden but now live in a two bedroom apartment with a teeny tiny deck. And while my husband is sweet and humours my need for furry and feathered creatures, he has drawn the line at one fair sized bird cage for Max and Shelby and a littler one for Basil and Peach (the finches). So your garden has me drooling!!! Big time!

What a beautiful back yard you have!! Your birds are very lucky!! I often wonder what everyone's aviaries look like - well, at least know I know what your's is like!! :)

Wow it's crazy that the birds will fly so fast... I guess in nature, stuff isn't as subtle as wire that you can see through, it's trees etc that are a bit more solid! The plans sound very exciting though, it will be neat for you to be able to separate the breeders / younglings / non-breeders and stuff.

It's good. Gives you the opportunity to restructure and make things better

plus you have had time to find promblem area and fix them to suit the birs better ( that dark corner area)

having seen it I love the plans you have, I think the spaces you had laided out would work giving enough room to them all

Nerwen did you bring that hammer and nails as planned

have you started Karen in everything, I know with you dealing with being sick and cleaning out Ken's aviary.

You will have to post pictures from the beginning to the end (not too much to ask huh?? :P

 nope, didn't even get Lily photos for Lin, thank god she forgave me.

What was so distracting Nerwen , couldn't have been all those babies fluttering around and sleeping in the palm of your hand huh?? :P

Am getting better....Ken is on holidays end July for 4 weeks and aviary mods can start then. Due to psittacosis in me (positively diagnosed today from last test)and in the aviary..........we have to take out all woodchips, a fair few plants, all perching and destroy. Scrub all existing wood etc....big job. Will take photos and will tell Ken to keep his shirt on in pikkies or the "furry boy" might scare ya. :P

men working with bare chest scary never :fear:

On a serious note, I am glad they found out what it was and that you are feeling better.

Off topic: how are the birds doing?
