Posted June 29, 200618 yr For the last few months i've been running an ad in the local paper wanting budgies, a couple of people phoned up but decided they wanted to keep their birds at the last minute ... Anyhow i got a phone call from a person that had three "male" budgies that he wanted to sell.. Sooooooo i now have three extra budgies to later add to my flock but i have to clear up their scaly face first etc etc. My favourite one is the one thats worse effected but i have faith that he will come great in the end.. The little pale blue spangle (?) is my favourite one, the poor little tack has really yucky feet too .. The normal green one (?) looks as if some of his cere is missing and then the little dark blue ones cere looks like its a little female in breeding condition .. I'm not sure exactly what they are so any ideas would be grateful Cheers :beer: Una
June 29, 200618 yr aww the poor things, did you tell the breeder they had this problem before buying?? I can't really tell with the ceres becuase of the mites but the green one looks a bit henny to me. I can't see the dark blue's cere in these pictures.
June 29, 200618 yr Author the person that i got them from was just a man that knew absolutly NOTHING about budgies and got sick of them because they wouldnt mate so came to the conclusion they were all boys and must be gotten rid of .. I didnt bother waisting my breath at that stage to tell him about the birds condition, he was even amazed that i handled the birds without a HUGE bath towel covering them (such a wuss).. I will no doubt run into him again soon since i live in a very small town and then ill tell him about the birds I did pay $20 for each bird but i was just so determined to give them a home better than the one they had .. As for what types they are, what exactly are they?? not as in sex yet but as in spangle etc etc....actually i think i will retract that question till i can get some better pictures of them because the lighting simply isnt doing their colours any justice....
June 29, 200618 yr They are cute una! I'm treating 2 of mine for scaley face at the moment, one I fairly only recently bought infected one of my others (I think they've paired off). Boy isn't it fun getting the lotion on them!
June 29, 200618 yr Author Karen i saw my vet today and she gave me some ivermectin (cattle dip) which is just one drop between the shoulder blades on the bare skin to get rid of the mites, it also gets rid of some worms (which ones i'm not too sure) and it also gets rid of air sack mites.. and ummm its also great for getting rid of fleas in dogs .. Its good because the topical stuffs work but don't kill the mite eggs that are still under the skin and that hatch at a later date but the ivermectin works by getting them from the inside out, and one drop and its over

Glad you have them Una Mutations: Normal Green Sky Blue Spangle Normal Cobalt I'll have to agree with Lovey except for the sky blue spangle.. I think it's a skyblue opaline spangle.

I thought an opaline had the body colour on the little triangle bit between their wings? :bluebudgie: and also the green has a sort of rip on her cere, do you think this is caused from the mites and will it heal normally? July 1, 200618 yr Hi Una They are just simply gorgeous. I still think the skyblue is an opaline spangle. Her undulation (is that the word?? the bars on the feathers anyway) doesn't come right down onto the shoulder blade area, and she has body colours on her wings. I don't think the cere will heal over again. I've read somewhere that that the scaley if gets too bad can damage the cere like that and then the budgie is left to suffer as the nares on the budgies are quite sensitive?!? I read that somewhere, but don't remember where though so don't quote me on it please.. hehe. Cheers

July 1, 200618 yr Author Unfortunately Lin it appears that the lil green budgies cere is ripped all the way through somehow I just cant wait for the scaley face to heal and then ill start the 30 day quarantine and THEN they can join the rest in the aviary for their sakes i just cant wait for that day, they are going to LOVE IT
July 2, 200618 yr Much better piccies. Yes your spangle is opaline like Cheeta is saying, you have to remember that the spangles don't have the black in the middle of the feather to change to the body colour, the fact that the thing lines are blue and not black mark him as opaline. It looks to be like the other two are hens, that dark blue one might be a violet too.
July 2, 200618 yr Author okay cool.. yeah i think i worked out that the sky blue one was the only male and i also was thinking the dark blue one was indeed a violet, she is more of a violet colour than cobolt and she has beautiful purple cheek spots too. Ill go see if i can get some better pictures of her.
July 2, 200618 yr Those little birds are so lucky that you found them and weren't put off by the way that they look. I've always felt that people who have animals (or birds) have an extra "niceness" gene that others don't, but judging by the condition of these little fellows, I guess that is a philosophy that needs a little qualification and mustn't be accepted at face value.
