Chloe Not Coming Out Of Cage. Help!

Featured Replies

hi!!

I have had my budgie Chloe for nearly 5 months. She is proving very difficult, if not impossible to tame. I talk to her all the time, I rub her belly with my finger, she seems to enjoy that but only for a few seconds then climbs up the cage to get away. she also refuses to come out of her cage. We leave the door open for hours and she doesn't come out. We have tried encouraging her out with millet and other favourite foods but that doesn't work either.

Any ideas?????????????? ;)

Hi!

I'm not really qualified to give advice, given that we've only had our little girl (Trixie) for a month!! But I found the same thing with Trixie. I can have the door open on her cage forever, & she will not jump out. She will look at the opening....scurry back & forth...but will not jump out. We would stick our hand in the cage & she wouldn't 'freak' out, but wouldn't come & investigate either.

I got to the point where I would just try to get her to step up onto my finger. When she did that, I would just bring my hand out of the cage. The first week, she kept jumping off my finger, & back into the cage. But I kept perservering. We've been doing this for just over a week. Now, she steps up quite easily & doesn't freak out with my hand in the cage. She will now come out of the cage on our finger - so long as I move my hand out quick enough. If I move slow, she jumps off everytime. I don't know if this is a good idea....I know that Trixie needs to 'trust' us enough to come out calmly...but she wouldn't do that.

Now, when she's out of the cage (so long as the cage is covered so she can't see it), she will sit with me as long as I want. I can pat her, smooch her with my cheek - & she's very friendly. But if I waited for her to come out on her own, I don't think she would. I think that by bringing her out of the cage now, she is learning to trust us much quicker than she would have if we had have left her in the cage.

I don't know if this is good advice or not, but it's what's worked for us.

Good luck!!!
