Posted June 13, 200619 yr okay, so I asked (in the food and nutrition forum) whether my budgie could eat coconut, but due to the lack of response on that part, I have passed on feeding him the coconut. I have managed to get the inside of the shells cleaned out to see if I can either make a food dish and/or toy/swing for him. I was wondering what I should clean the shell with as the coconut is imported from Dominican to the grocery stores here in Canada and I would have no idea whether they use pesticides in the Domican or not. Any ideas? Or is my best bet to forget my crafty side, and buy a regular budgie toy offered at pet stores? Thanks for your advice. Terri
June 13, 200619 yr Yes it is okay, because I bought a coconut shell toy that I use for a food dish . Here are the foods not to give Please do never offer the following fruit to your budgies: Avocado (too fatty and toxic for birds near kernel) Fresh dates (they contain too much tanning agent) Grapefruit, Pomelo (too much citric acid and bitter) Kumquats (too acidic) Passion fruit (nearly all sorts contain too much citric acid) Japanese persimmons, unripe (contain too much tanning agent) Lemon or Lime (too much citric acid) http://www.birds-online.de/nahrung/obst_en.htm
June 13, 200619 yr okay thanks, so would you say it is safe just to clean the shell out with soap and water and do whatever I want to do with it then or should I be sanding it to get all the coconut "hairs" off the outside of the shell? June 13, 200619 yr I would dry it out for a couple days or you can warm it in the oven like you would the branches at low temp of 250 for 15 to 20 mins (keep an eye on it) and then cool and give it to them. Don't take off the hairs my birds love to pick at them Mine has both 1/2's too it like a hut. There are 3 strings on each side with beads and then 1 long string to hold it from the top of the cage and then there are some of the shells hanging from the bottom 1/2. I can find a picture if you like.
June 14, 200619 yr I saw two black faced lovebirds peeking out of one in a pet store, they were so cute! Looked like big holes at the front and back of it.
June 14, 200619 yr okay, I bought it from PetsMart but I notice they have the same toy as PM does mine is very similar to this one http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...=1&N=2003&Nty=1
June 14, 200619 yr The previous owner of our house and aviaries left the cocnut nests here that used to be for finch nests, but the finches don't use them. My budgies do though....little playhuts and caves for mostly the youngsters but some adults get into them as well.
