Spangle Babies Day Out In The Aviary

First of the brave baby spangles to come out of the nest and stay out is Wallace (boy), I think. He is an explorer. Very confident and a brilliant flyer from the word go. Straight out of the nest and flying everywhere. He will step onto my finger to be walked around the aviary but independant little man will then fly off the full length of the aviary closely followed around by his father. He was looked after by his Dad, Rocket. Also an adopted "auntie" , Butter, decided to help him around the aviary and fed him also, on occasion too. Tonight is his first night out on the perches. I have checked on him and he sits comfortably between some other budgies in a draught free area. Here is part of Wallace's day 1-1114.jpg

Wallace is one of three identical spangles ( Wallace, Teddie and Sansia ) out of the box of Swift and Rocket. Other siblings are Goldie a yellow double factor spangle and Biggles, a green budgie.

Oh he is gorgeous Karen! :bluebudgie: Isn't it amazing how quick they grow then they just step out of the nest and instictively know how to fly... Oh I see my Butter - she's on my steal list too!!! I think I might add Wallace! :ausb:

:bluebudgie: Isn't Butter's colour interesting....the brightest yellow on head and cheeks....looks like she has dipped her head in the butterdish :( Wallace is one of three EXACTLY the same !!

Wallace is super stunning and what a good and brave boy :(

WALLACE.... I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Kirby :)

Great pics. He is a YF1 correct? Can't wait to see pics of the DFS out and about!!!!!

Looking like they will be YF2's. Even though some of the three like this one start out looking mostly blue with yellow face and wings there is a colour bleed of yellow through the blue. Apparently at their first moult it turns a kind of greenish blue. The DFS is fully feathered and nearly ready to leave the nest. There is five babies in that nest right now and all big ones due to leave, except the youngest. One adopted freeloader in there and four others...two like Wallace, the DFS and a YF1 normal boy who is a boarder. :D

They are stunning, you should have called them Huey, Duey and Louie (Laughing out loud) for the 3 identicals (didn't think of that before) :D. Have to keep that in your back pocket for your next 3 that look exactly alike.

Looking like we have more spangles brewing in the nesting boxes. :hap: and will surely have a couple of pieds here and there. Ming(albino lacewing) and Boss (yellow creamino) only surviving baby is all yellow. Ciara abandoned her last two babies in the cold last night and has gone husband hunting. I found the youngest one too late to save its life but the double factor pied was still moving, though cold. Not fed. I put this baby into Angel's nest and as of tonight it is doing well and is extremely well fed. :D

bad bad parents (Laughing out loud)..glad the last one is doing okay :D

Can't wait to see pics.

Awww, good old Wal, all ready to take on the world! Thank goodness for daddy and auntie Butter to look after him!! :D

He is stunning, budgies of his colouring are called rainbow budgies over here. There is a place called Heathrow birds, in the UK and they speacialise in all types of birds from canaries and finches through to macaws. Its a fabulous place. They charge a lot of money for that colouring, almost double the normal green or blue marked budgie!!!

Your very lucky. Do you have any advice on starting breeding/hand rearing?

Wow....charging more for that colour and I got 3 out of this nest :D I wish I could help you with advice but handrearing isn't in my area of expertise, but others here are very successful at it. Start a topic and see what advice you get. I have learnt a lot about breeding along the way and through this forum...too much for a short answer. Ask the odd questions here on the forum and I will jump in with advice for you. Cheers Karen

Just adding ......here is a picture taken today of the double factor spangle in the nesting box..............1a1169.jpg

They really are quite gorgeous.

I can not wait to start to breed them! Are there many problems associated with breeding. Or are the parents usually very good?

I have read many articles and books which give a lot of bredding advice and there dont seem to be many problems. Are there any major do's and dont's?

Everyone has a different idea of what a problem is. I would not say breeding is problem free at all. Saying...."quote...there dont seem to be many problems " is a very naive attitude. Every choice you make has consequences that can affect the lives of your birds. Arm yourself with much knowledge, ask many questions, be prepared for the worst scenario and anything over and above that is a bonus. Be prepared to seek vet advice where necessary and before its too late. Know every conceivable personality trait of your birds, and their relationship with others. Watch them closely to learn all you can well before you go putting in a nesting box waiting for the patter of tiny feet. Best thing to do is stick with a forum like this, listen to all good advice from those who have "been there, done that " ....the knowledgable ones with experience.

As to this question ...." are the parents usually very good? "....the answer is NO. You will get mothers that abandon their babies, they may not sit with them and keep them warm, they toss viable fertile eggs out of the nest, they stop feeding two out of four babies for no good reason, they can kill or injure their own babies, they can eat their own eggs with babies in them. If you have a lot of birds, as I do, you will have a percentage of very good mothers. Those you treat like gold for they are rare. Many things can upset a mother with babies and cause them to do things that aren't right. You need to learn their personalities and quirks, watching closely for hours sometimes to anticipate future problems. Breeding is not easy, so all I can say is learn all you can BEFORE you start and be prepared. :D

Those babies are soooo gorgeous!! I could just give them all a big bear hug!!! (Laughing out loud)...
