Posted June 10, 200619 yr one of my females in the avairy has a big vent ive just noticed it when i went out the back today she hasnt been in the breeding boxes ,i was told that the female want breed if she doesnt like the nesting place, so that makes it weird because she wouldnt of mated with a male and if she has would the egg be stuck? what could it be? can she pass the egg? and is there any danger of her dieing? :fear
June 10, 200619 yr they don't have to breed produce an egg which of course is unfertilized. It sounds like she is egg bound and yes she can die. I hope someone with more experience comes quickly, I will see if there is anyone and PM them.
June 10, 200619 yr If a hen bird has a stuck egg (egg bound) and she is trying to pass it for 12-24 hours without success she can quickly die without treatment. This happened to one of my young hens recently. Had I known she was eggbound earlier she may still be alive today. Although the egg was passed in the end, the time before that where she struggled to pass it, took its toll on her health. She was dead the next day. If she is sitting fluffed up in the aviairy somewhere with a swelling around her vent chances are she IS eggbound and needs urgent Vet help. Happens to some very young Hens, also due sometimes to cold weather. Check her out and get help from a vet immediately if the egg is stuck. Good luck with your bird.
