Some Questions

Sorry if this has been repeated before but here goes.

So Mums been looking at things that will keep Rejy warm in the winter and she likes the idea of a nest box. first problem is Rejys a 4 year old girl and we are planning to get a baby boy in the hope they'll get along better with an age difference and boy/girl mating rather then girl/girl. Mum seems to believe that most eggs budgies lay are infertile and nothing will come of it, is this true or not?

And my idea was to get this for her-

Would that work like a nest box and encourage egg laying or not?

And last question is would Rejy get on with another girl? all the things we've read have said girls are more likely to bite and be territorial? The biting part is right. No matter what we do it's impossible to hand tame Rejy she attacks you.

Thanks

Emma

A nestbox is not a good idea for a bed, especially if you have a boy and girl budgie in the cage regardless of ages. Even a 9 week old male will try and mate a female. There is something about having a nesting box that triggers a budgies mind to "lets have babies" . Successful matings with a nestbox in the cage will in all probability result in babies. It is not true that most eggs are infertile anyway. That mostly occurs when matings are unsuccessful or breeding Mums are overbred. If the parents or one parent is immature there may well be infant deaths due to inexperience with feeding babies. Especially the Dads that are too young. Two females are fine. The only silliness comes into play when there are both nesting boxes and males to fight over. Two girls without a nesting box will be fine together. Always expect the initial " peck, peck cos one was here first and I want more perch space " kinda thing, but that is usually over in less than a day. The snuggle hut you showed can be viewed as a nesting box by some adventurous male and female combinations. I have had budgies look at any hollows or crevices with a view in mind to raising a family where you have a boy / girl budgie combination. I think you should have same sex combinations in your cage. So if you have a girl get another girl. Hope this has been of some help to you....cheers karen

So budgies dont do all out dominance-fight-to-the-daeth things? Seems kinda odd I've experienced it with every other animal (Laughing out loud), I've been trying to figure out how you seperate a pair of fighting budgies you cant exactly put a show baord between em or turn the hose on em (Laughing out loud). I'm glad to know they don't do that.

So a gal is fine too?

If you have a girl adding a second girl would be good. But no nesting box or anything that resembles one or they may choose to fight over it. There are fight to the death scraps with budgies, usually over claiming a nesting box someone already has. They can get badly injured but I dont think you have that to fear with two girls and no box. :)

And its fine to introduce a second budgie into a cage that another budgie has already been settled into? I'm juts a bit nervous. I've only ever had a single budgie and my experience lies with piggers. To do a first introduction in an already claimed cage means you'll never get the two together without the help of a nuetered boar and some vinegar (covering scent glands)

Cos it'd be great to test run the newest cage first, and its easier to do so without wtaching over introductions as well.

Well for a start you dont want to put your new budgie straight in with your existing budgie. There is at least 30 days quarantine or you risk the death of both birds if disease is introduced. So a cage for the new one elsewhere for 30 days and then the cage next to the other budgies cage for awhile and from that point on others may help with ideas.
