Posted May 28, 200619 yr I am sooooo excited! Just got home after a loooong day, went out to feed the aviary birds and check nest boxes, and I found our very first (ever) hatchling!!! Yay!!!!! It is so cute and pink and new, with a full crop, and a cute little fuzzy butt(I thought they were completely neked when they first hatch!) Mum and Dad budgie, Patches and Rusty, seem to have an idea of what they are doing, as they both have full crops and so does baby. Praying for mild weather for the next week or so, so bubs has more of a chance against the elements..... Now, waiting to see what happens with the other 12 eggs, between Patches and Olive! May 28, 200619 yr Awww, that's great!!! Congrats for your first hatchling!! Yes, we need regular pics updates!
June 3, 200619 yr Author Well, sadly, the first baby was tossed from the nest box by Mum (Patches) its first night. The second baby hatched Mondaynight, and is a fat litttle slug, now 4 1/2 days old with its eyes beginning to open. Baby number three hatched on Wednesday night, going well so far, I actually think its fatter at this stage than number 2. The fourth egg was due to hatch yesterday, chick is alive in shell and not far off hatching, it has chipped the shell and we heard it chirping inside the egg. Baby number 5 is due to hatch tomorrow, and I think that will be all of them!!!! Two eggs are clear, and one was tossed from the nest the day it was laid, so I dont think Patches did too badly! Its a task to keep them all warm at night, but so far so good! They are still in the avairy and I pop a hot water bottle upright behind the nestbox, one beside it and a flannelette baby sheet over the lot, and then around 9 at night I pop a babies quilt (folded in half and then folded again) over the lot, its beautiful and warm in the nest then! Our temps have fallen to minus 5 celcius some nights, and as the weeks go on I can see me having to replace the water in the hw bottles more often, perhaps every 3-4 hours. Olives eggs have yet to hatch, and I have doubts that they actually will, because her nest box was accidently knocked over after the fourth egg was laid (I wasnt told until recently ) Working on the photos! I have had trouble with my camera connection, and I cant transfer from the camera to the computer at the moment, so I am hoping to get them on disk shortly!
June 4, 200619 yr Author Egg number five hatched this afternoon! I managed to take this photo moments after it hatched, and sucessfully transferred the photos onto my computer. So far all four surviving chicks look healthy and are being fed well. The eldest baby is 6 days old, his eyes are opened and he is getting pin feathers...I call him fatso and he gets cuddles every day. Edited August 27, 200816 yr by **Liv**
