Posted May 28, 200619 yr Hi Guys, I've read through a heap of posts here about clipping budgie claws and Stitch's are getting a little long so I'm gonna try doing it myself. His feet are pink and I can clearly see the blood line. He'll sit in a hand fairly quietly since he's been trained to do that from when we bought him. I've got a helper and some flour just in case. My question though is after I clip them should they be filed like with an emery board or something? I've clipped toenails on other animals but never anything that was small enough to sit on my finger (Laughing out loud)
May 28, 200619 yr I didn't when I used to clip my bird's nails (I now take them to the vet for that) so you shall have to see what others say. What everybody will say is to have something available to stop the bleeding if the vein accidentally gets nicked. :ausb:
May 28, 200619 yr have some Kwik stop or flour near by. if youve never clipped nails before i would recomend getting a vet or sombody else who knows how to, to show you how to do it properly. one really bad cut can injure the bird and make that foot very touchy for the rest of its life. But if you are going to do it yourself, dont cut right to the kwik, take of little by little until you are satisfied, and make sure you cut at a downward angle with the nail. And if your bird will alow you, you can use a nail file just to smooth out any rough edges that can catch and rip the nail.
May 28, 200619 yr we started with clipping just the two front ones coz they were the worst ones no accidents, no bleeding just a bit of squirming The theory I work on is it's easier to build on a good experience than try to take back a bad one. I was a bit worried about whether he'd get a little paniced so we just settled for the first two to see how he'd go. When we let him go there was no shaking or anything, usually when he's upset he'll sort of half stick his wings out in a huff but there was none of that he just preened himself and went back to playing. I filed them a little bit and that seems to work well, he's been doing acrobatic tricks (turning upside down) from my finger lately so I have all little red marks where his toenails stick in while he's holding on. We've also started talking he now says "good boy" (usually when he's being bad) and "come here Stitch" (usually when he wants to sit on your shoulder but you haven't called him). :ausb:
May 28, 200619 yr :ausb: That is a great idea, just do a little bit at a time depending on the bird's temperament. :bluebudgie:
