Posted May 26, 200619 yr Hi: We just added a budgie to our family of critters (two boxers, one cat and one hamster). Anyway, this is the first bird I have ever owned so need some help. I have done a lot of reading on this site and many others about budgie behaviour and am wondering about this one. My budgie is young but not exactly sure how hold he/she (Casper - yup a white budgie) is exactly. I want to do the best I can to tame Casper and so far he has come around from two weeks ago. His cage is in my office with me (I work from home). He will come over to the front of his cage and climb on the bars to get face to face with me and seems to get all excited when I go out for a little while and return home and comes right to the front of th cage to see me (at least I am assuming that is a good thing) Anyway, he...hoping if I say he then maybe he will be a male as my experience with female animals has not been good in the past :(Laughing out loud): will now go onto my hand when I reach in his cage, but then he will start to bite me, at first the bite is involved with him licking me and then his bites will get a little bit harder and then he will back off again and then harder again. He will move all over my hand doing this. Could it be territorial or a nervous or scared behaviour?? Any suggestions would be great.
May 26, 200619 yr if hes being friendly on your hand or sholder and comes out willingly and doesnt look scared of you they might just be love bites, or hes testing your hand to make sure its safe or he could just be chewing it, That sounds like something Snow does. i dont know if they realise how hard their biting but if its bothering you just discourage this behaviour and politley blow in his face if they doesnt stop you can keep him away from your hand but is he biting when your hands in the cage or when hes on it outside of the cage? Welcome to the forum We would love pics
May 27, 200619 yr He has been pretty friendly outside of his cage, although I think he is still a little nervous when out of his cage. Any of this more intense biting I have only noticed inside his cage, although he may have chewed on my hand a few times while I had him out yesterday, but didn't seem to be as intense as today's chewing/biting. I haven't had him on my shoulder yet as I read somewhere not to let him do that until he is aware of who is BIG BIRD and who is little bird Hopefully he is just checking me out to see what I am all about...I already have a crabby cat, I don't need a crabby bird too I will post a picture when I figure out how to do that
May 27, 200619 yr it sounds to me that he is he being defensive inside his cage because this is his home and he feels that you are invading it , not that you mean too. When you put your hand in the cage I would work with a treat and finger taming inside the cage. Therefore he is not fearful, he may feel that you are going to grab him, he most likely feels threatened. You can go to www.budgietalk.com and looking under taming tips, Terri one of our members here does a great job of giving pointers. Welcome to our forums
