May 22, 200619 yr Looks like all the moms are doing a great job so far. Keep us posted please with pics.
May 22, 200619 yr Author One of my newer Mums decided that a great place to raise babies was in the base of a hollow log standing vertically in the aviary. The only thing wrong with that was it would fill up with water when it rained....and she would end up sitting on top of her babies with very little room to move. So today I had to evict her, to a better place. I managed to extricate the darling budgie and found to my surprise she was sitting on 5 eggs and was about to lay another. She and her partner have been moved to a breeding cage, where she promptly laid the sixth egg in a nesting box. Her other five eggs are temporarily under Laila ( Curry's partner )...until she gets settled. Then we will sneak her own eggs back under her to raise. Laila is currently keeping warm 9 eggs, 4 of her own and 5 adopted ones. The adopted ones have been marked so they go back to the real mother in a day or two. It's a fast shuffle but will work out in the end. You gotta watch these birdies....second budgie in a fortnight that decided on a weird place to lay eggs :fear
May 22, 200619 yr Awesome! Hopefully she'll settle soon and get her eggies back with her. Cool story.

I hope her eggs are fertile Karen! Can you candle them for me, and male sure? Red viens=alive :) . Nothing inside= dead I dont know if i can wait 9 more days lol Kirby Splish and Splash are both 9 months old as it turns out. I checked back with the breeder and found they were older than I thought when I got them. A bit young for breeding maybe but she had paired up with Rufus (dom pied) and laid eggs with no nesting box... and in a tree trunk !! When I saw them in and out of the tree trunk I thought they were just playing like with a newfound toy not nesting. It was only when she kept going missing that a search found her in the tree trunk sitting on eggs. A big surprise but so far so good. I will watch her. So far she is being a dutiful "mother" to her eggs. I will try and candle Laila and Curry's eggs for you Kirby. I have to get a torch that does the job. Edited May 24, 200619 yr by budgiebird
May 24, 200619 yr ahh the tree trunks is how they lay in nature, I bet you will have more like that keep an eye out.
May 24, 200619 yr Author ahh the tree trunks is how they lay in nature, I bet you will have more like that keep an eye out. The very minute we got her and the eggs out of the tree trunk two others were trying to move in too !! :budgiedance: so we have filled the tree trunk with kitty litter and then some soil so it now is seen just as a place to play not a place to lay :ausb:
May 24, 200619 yr HAHAHAHAH KAREN! ! ! ! ! Thats Hilarious!!! I also thought the twins were babies! The weird thing is that shes had several eggs fine, for her size. (Laughing out loud). Good for her! Can you post pics of this famous log for us? I want to make a tree nesting box for my birds. Sicne mine DONT and will NOT breed when in own breeding cage ( :ausb: ). I wanted to take a tree, about 8 inches wide, and carve out a 'human' door about 4" x 3" wide, with a 1.5" budgie entrance door, so i can open the human door, and check on them. But it too would look like a real tree. My birds would get a kick out of it! Since they lokve chewing the boxes, and shreading wood! hahaha, so maybe Splash is like them, or their like Splash ? (Laughing out loud) :budgiedance: Im just worried now becuase my 6 week old male is mounting all my hens, and him, as well as my 11 week old hen both have visible iris rings already! I got them from a breeder, and watched them before they left the nest, so i know thier ages are correct... weird eh? (Laughing out loud) YAY! Candle those eggs PLEASSEEE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Im Kinda scared though. What if they aren't :) But i bet they are :) :) Kirby

Its only known as budgie paradise by me, why would he go there for budgies right? Well NO! (Laughing out loud). May 25, 200619 yr very nice Karen , I like the second one look at all those feathers already is that the adopted one?
May 25, 200619 yr Author very nice Karen , I like the second one look at all those feathers already is that the adopted one? Yes ...that is the adopted baby of Bunny and Kiwi. Bunny abandoned her first nest when we had mice problems, so I fostered her eggs out. One of Bunny's babies died when its foster Mum wouldn't sit with the baby and I unfortunately didn't know it had arrived to put it with another Mum. So this is its real parents I have posted new photos today of Swift and Rockets five babies in that topic...they are getting me curious as to end result and colours
May 25, 200619 yr WHOA ! ! ! ! Enough babies/eggs Karen?!?!?! (Laughing out loud)....IT just goes to show you that the average number of eggs/babies per clutch is around 5-6, as Budgiebird can prove with her million pairs No need to candle Currys/Lailas eggs, i think im praying enough that they will be fertile, you dont need to candle Kirby
