Posted May 22, 200619 yr Just a couple of days before the wedding Ken bought me some budgies and accessories from a breeder reducing her stock to manageable levels ( she was getting too old to care for them ). I got 8 breeder cages, 16 nesting boxes, auto feeder and drinkers, various cups and food containers and seven very lovely, healthy big budgies. All are prenamed as they have been well looked after and spoilt. So here is Guy 2 yrs Edited August 17, 200817 yr by Dave_McMinn
May 22, 200619 yr Beautiful birds, but I don't envy you! How on earth do you afford to properly feed and vet nearly 100 birds without working every waking moment and still have time to clean, prepare the food, etc.?? :fear I need to figure out your profession and go into it because my eight nearly break the bank as it is.

The birds take a lot of time during the day caring for their needs. As I have stated before my profession is leadlight and stained glass artist, and I work from home now that I have shut my shop. When I work, I am very well paid for my talents. I do not feed pellets as they are way too expensive here and my birds eat a balanced and varied diet. Feeding birds works differently when you have more birds ...everything is bought in bulk quantities ..........my birds cost me an average of $20 per week to feed ....all of them PS Adam has a great many more budgies than I do. Have you figured out his profession, and budget too ? Edited May 22, 200619 yr by budgiebird
May 22, 200619 yr What is the name of the budgie below Lucy and Sam. He is stunning!!! What is his mutation??? I'm also curious about the auto feeder. Can you post a picture? Edited May 22, 200619 yr by Shawna

That bird is just a better photo of Sam in the cage above. I am not sure of his exact mutation. The auto feeder isn't anything special just a gravity feed seed container. :fear Edited May 22, 200619 yr by budgiebird
May 22, 200619 yr Author They are very gentle birds, mostly stepping onto my finger in the cage and easily caught, do not bite ....and yes Sam is gorgeous. He and Guy and Lucy are quite large birds :fear
May 22, 200619 yr Karen they are beautiful! Congrats. I agree, it seems the more birds you have, the less $ they cost, go figure! I buy in bulk too, but i only have 1/4 what you have, (Laughing out loud) (p.s., you closed your shop? are you no doing your glasswork anymore? I hope you are, they are wonderful! to bad im not closer to you, you could do a horse one for me!)

The new house has a large three room reverse cycle airconditioned workshop just metres from the back door and the aviaries so going to work is easy. The hardest thing is the distraction of the birds when trying to get work done. :fear

And that's all I'll say as far as that goes. I never knew what you were into as I can't possibly follow every post of every member of the board. You didn't have to share if you didn't want to, I was just curious. I've gotten lost in the sea of new members and can't keep details straight anymore. Memory like a goldfish.
May 22, 200619 yr Author YAY Mrs. Morgan! They are GORGEOUS KAREN! ! ! ! ! Can i have Ty, Guy, Thomas, anc Chad? Pwwwwease??? lol :fear Got new pics of the cages you got with them? Kirby The breeder cages are very like the ones Daz has been making but in this case the nesting boxes are at the side. Front is best as it takes up less space, so maybe when they aren't occupied I shall make modifications to put the nest boxes on the front. These birds and the others that this lady had were very nice large birds. Their feathering was of good quality, and many "posed" like show birds. I would go back for more if the opportunity arose just to increase the quality of my own birds. But I will stop well before capacity in the aviaries is reached. Stacks of space in there but no point overcrowding or getting silly about it. I am already at a point where birds I would love to keep, I cannot for practical reasons. ie...too many boys etc. Funny though, most of these birds were boys Beautiful birds, but I don't envy you! Quantity seems to work out cheap enough to feed and still do it properly, it seems. Fresh greens from a growers market not supermarkets, and bulk seed from livestock suppliers. The fact that a lot of birds go through the bulk sacks of seed quickly, means it isn't going stale or becoming less nutritious. I use the premium mix seed which costs more but it supposedly better. I would like to mix my own too, so if you have any good mix seed types and quantities I would be happy to hear about them for the benefit of the birds. I am lucky that working from home allows me the time to spend with the birds, sometimes at the expense of time meant for work. Also fortunate that when I do my leadlight work, it is often very well paid. But is a "famine or feast" business. Too much work or too little. Is very creative. Edited May 22, 200619 yr by budgiebird
May 22, 200619 yr Yeah, I can see how that would work out easily. (And while pellets are good I really don't think you HAVE to have them to have healthy birds anyway. Variety's the most important thing no matter how you view pellets; in my opinion at least.) I had a couple of recipes for mixes you can do yourself, I just have to find them. I've yet to try any recipes as I've found a good place to order a mix online but they sound pretty good. I'll see if I can dig them up for you. They may be similar to what you already feed though. I know they're pretty similar to what I've been ordering. Edited May 22, 200619 yr by eterri
