New Friend For Polo

Hi everyone!

I got a new friend for Polo yesterday as I didn't want him to be on his own for longer than necessary, so I went to a local breeder and bought a gorgeous budgie from him. I looked at all of his budgies and every single one of them was in absolutely beautiful condition and the budgie I chose looked stunning. I brought her home, her cage was already set up for her, and she was understandably a bit nervous and flappy, so I left her on her own last night. I came to check on her this morning and she appears to have a bit of a sticky vent? She's definitely eating because I put some seed on the floor for her and she's been sat eating that but she doesn't seem to be sitting on her perches much, and now she's just sat on the floor looking at me. Do you think that could be due to the stress of her being moved? She's still only young (about 12 weeks), but I've gone and got her some Pro C vitamins to put in her water because I thought that might help.

Can anyone think of anything more I should be doing? I'm keeping her nice and quiet and covering her up at night, but if anyone has any more suggestions as to how I could make her more comfortable I'd be really grateful for your help!

Thank you!!

is she in a seperate room from your other budgie? Quarantine is a must no matter where the bird comes from.

Give her a few days to settle in. Its most likely from stress that her poos all runny and making her vent icky because its wet. if it dosnt clear up in a few days or she starts looking Puffy, dull eyed, and really sleepy concider a trip to the vets.

But for now. a quiet room, try not to stick your hand in the cage if you dont have to. let her settle. if shes not used to being covered up its probably scaring her aswell. maybe hold off on the covering until she settles a bit more.

Oh, she's no where near Polo at the minute and she's in the quietest room in the house. I'm thinking that maybe I should lower her seed and water dishes so that she can reach them from the floor, should she need to? Then at least I can always put them back to where they are now as she gets more confident and sits on the perches more. I am worried about her not drinking - there's plenty of seed on the floor for her which she's been happily munching at all day. I'll keep a close eye on her for the next few days, and won't cover her up again until she's a bit more confident. Thanks so much for your advice! I'll let you know how she gets on! :budgiedance:

if you keep moving the food and water down to the bottom of the cage she will always expect to find it there ( well my guys would ) ad a perch lower to the ground and place another seed and water cup there eventually she will make her way to the highest perch and find her other seed and water cups. you can try putting her veggies and fruit on the floor on a little tea cup saucer or right on the floor and see if she nibbles those she will get water from them if she doesnt drink from her dish

Sounds like nerves to me. Most of my budgies have had sticky vents or runny poos for abotu 48 hours after bringing them home. And then they return to normal. If it lasts more than a few days then I would seek the help of your avian vet. I think the same goes for food and water. Most of mine ate and drank nothing for at least 24 hours. Good luck. Can't wait to see a picture!!!

Thanks for all the advice! I've actually put another seed and water pot in the cage now, one nearer the floor and one near her perch, so if she doesn't want to move very far then she doesn't have to yet if she wants to sit on her perch there's food and water there, too. I'll give her some veggies when i get home tonight and see if she eats those. I'll leave it another couple of days and if I don't see an improvement in her she'll be straight to the vet!

what helps and I have done with both my birds especially Pretty who was more skitish was keep their cage on all 3 sides covered with a sheet or towel helps make them feel more secure and then slowly day by day roll it back a bit more. Good luck.

Congrats on your newbie! Yes, i agree, it sounds like nerves. Give her a few days to settle in, she should be fine! (pst. pics please!)

Well my new budgie looked a lot more lively yesterday when I got in from work - she was sat on her perch looking at me :ausb: I had to clean her cage out because I spilt some water as I was changing it, and she seemed really interested in what I was doing, but didn't make a fuss! I came and checked on her this morning, and she was back on the floor but moved back to the perch when I put some veggies in for her. She doesn't try to fly or flap up to her perch, she tries climbing up to it. But I'm quitely hopeful that's she's becoming a bit more settled now! I'll get pics for you asap!! :bluebudgie:

I agree that covering all three sides except for one is a good idea. I did this with Louie and he settled right in. This works too if the bird isn't used to being covered up. This way she will understand that it's an all of the time thing (at least for now) and that it won't hurt her and she will eventually appreciate not having to worry about what might attack her from behind. Sounds like you're doing a marvelous job! Try putting some millet near the top of her cage too. This will con her into exploring her cage a bit more (birds will do anything for millet! :) Have fun with your new little one!

Fantastic news!! Cutie (that's now her name! :D) is eating out of her seed pot, instead of off the floor!! And she's so much more lively - she's very nosey, too! Polo's in the other room, and he's quite a vocal fella, but Cutie can hear him and she's started cheeping, too!!! She's so lovely and she doesn't waste any time in devouring the veggies I put in for her! He vent is no longer sticky and messy and she's not as nervous now, either! I'll have to get some photos on here for you! I do have some, I just haven't had them resized yet! I'm so happy that she'd finally beginning to settle in!! :) Thanks so much for all your advice!! I'll keep you updated! :D

Awesome news!!! Really looking forward to pictures of Cutie!
