Posted May 13, 200619 yr I have an invasion of ants in my cages. Does anyone know of something that will stop them without hurting the birds. These are outside cages and I clean them regularly. Charlie
May 13, 200619 yr 1) Sprinkle Ant Dust to within 3 feet of the cages - this will kill all ants that come into contact with it but far enough away from the cages that it won't affect them. 2) Ant Rid - put it in the ants path & they take it back to the nest & it kills any ants that eat it. Both products are available from Woolworths, K-mart, Target, nurseries etc.
May 13, 200619 yr Ants can be repelled by vinegar, cayenne pepper, citric extracts, bone meal, cinnamon, cream of tartar, salt, and perfume. You will have to keep trying different repellents to find the one your ants aren't willing to tolerate. Place lines of the selected repellent at points of entry and at various points along their path. Another method of elimination involves the elimination of the nest. If you can find the nest, you can try pouring boiling water over the nest. If that isn't sufficient, you can try adding cayenne pepper to the boiling water, or using citrus extracts. If you have multiple nests, you could dig up a bucket of ants from one nest and dump it on another nest. Ants are very territorial, and they will readily hunt and kill invading colonies.
May 13, 200619 yr Author Thanks for the advice. I will give some of these a go & see what happens. It worries me with ants around when the birds are breeding. Charlie
